That is exactly how things are. I think the author was basically saying that sometimes it weighs more heavily on his mind than others. (It certainly does for me)

Out of boredom and curiosity I just started overlaying everything I know about birds and flight. Everything from it's bone structure to the aerodynamics of flight feathers etc. I blacked out and by the time I was aware again we 10 - 15 min

I've read Brave New World. And yeah, most work in society is mindless. Ideally, I don't think people should have to work at all anymore, but there are a whole lot of problems stopping that from happening. Really expanding on this stuff ta

I very well may, although that's only one example of what I view as a much larger issue. I currently make less than 10K a year though, so I'm sort of focusing on that first. EDIT: Clarification.

Question. Why did we (human beings) spend so many resources and so much effort developing the LHC when it seems obvious that a comparable amount of effort and resources could have dramatically improved our way of life? That's a complicate

The reason we have people working fast-food jobs is that they need the money and it's still cheaper than full automation Right, that would be part of what I view as a larger problem with society (at least in the US) at the moment. People

That's debatable. It is, however, the most widely known language (besides maybe java?) that you can write the types of applications that C++ is used for in.

Give me $100K/yr and I will make one hell of an effort to change society in a positive way. To be blunt - fuck having a better car or larger house for myself, fuck spending $100K/yr on me .

Automated driving doesn't seem like it would be very hard if you had the ability to do whatever you wanted to the roads / cars on the road. Of course we're not in a situation anywhere near that ideal. I share the opinion that a lot of thing

This is pretty well done, although it's not really too much more than a "proof of concept". I'd really like to see a lot more movement in this direction from online game developers, and it seems like we're just starting to hit the point whe

I'm actually working on something like this in my free time for Ubuntu flavors. I've been trying to figure out how to get some funding for it so I can focus on it, but I'm not sure if it's a service I should try to charge users for (automat

That is true, although for asking questions you can just tag it as the language. Php probably wasn't listed in the popular tags due partially to the windows/.NET tendency of the site, and the tendency of the people participating in the beta

I was amused by the contrast between (on the one hand) Joel's long list of instructions and "how-to" hints in his blog post, and (on the other hand) the seeming absence of instructions/guidance on the site itself. The way I see it, the si

In this specific case, the tagging works out a lot like "sections" anyhow - I do believe that most of the questions are language-specific, and that if you go browse the tags, most of the ones with a lot of questions are language tags. The t

Threading support is better in python than in perl? I'm not familiar with perls threading model (or libraries), but this seems wrong - considering things like the GIL in python. Could you elaborate a bit on this?

All the warmups and homework excersizes, most of the exam problems. Research problems not so much. I'm still working my way through it. I'm not trying to say it isn't challenging - just that it's approachable. It's extremely challenging.
