It may have attention, but almost nothing uses it (also, it’s not that good security-wise to begin with with developers defining their own permissions), most everything is still just run as your user, having access to your ssh keys, browser

They did make it, but with Amazon’s backing. Subsystem for Android is still available and works surprisingly well, but thanks to Microsoft’s similarly short attention span than Google’s, it is discontinued. Though while we are at it — why i

X being network transparent hasn’t been true for decades — no one uses xmotif and similar GUI libs, they just grab a buffer and paint stuff themselves, making the X protocol an inefficient format to carry bitmaps around. Local-first is the

Interestingly enough, this actually turned into a positive over time — also, java was usually fast enough (compared to python) to avoid reaching for native all the time, so it wasn’t as big a pain point, it managed to create an almost compl

Java’s ecosystem is just vastly bigger. In many categories, Java has multiple open-source offerings vs .NET’s single, proprietary one that is often just a bad copy of one of the former libraries.

Go is not at all playing in the same league as Zig or Rust. Of course managed languages are more than fine for almost every use case, but I really hate this trends to wash go together with low-level languages for absolutely no good reason.

It’s almost like “any other computer” is not thin as a finger, packed to the brim with features that require miniaturization. Can you just fix an F1 engine with a wrench?

That would probably be infeasibly slow. There is a whole field of CS that deals with minimizing error when doing floating point math. They just probably use decent algorithms/encoding.

With all due respect, I believe there is a certain demographic in IT that just has a way too trivial working model of how stuff they don’t work on directly operates. Like, they know how to do a simple HTTP query in C/go whatever, and t

Like, what is better? GUIs are hard, the old way was duplicating state at the ”view” and the “model” layer, resulting in millions of bugs. The core idea of react v=f(m) is sound, and is the correct approach. Also, react itself is not even t

How are throws non-local? They simply pop a stackframe, the exact same way as the `return` keyword. Then the calling method gets to decide what to do, exceptions just have an implicit “unwrap-or-return/bubble up”. Exceptions are nothi

Something being analogous to something else means, that there is a bidirectional function/mapping between the two. One can easily map any Result-typed expression to a checked exception one, and vice versa.
