It is better when you cannot get a package otherwise, so if you use a distro with a big repo, it happens mostly with proprietary software.

I had some trouble with Linux in the past but sticking to ThinkPads gives me no problem nowadays. I always thought it was hard to support sleep properly due to the diversity of hardware, but isn’t Apple supposed to have a big advantage here

I tried LibreChat and OpenWebUI, between the two I would recommend OpenWebUI. It feels a bit less polished but has more functions that run locally and things work better out of the box. My favorite thing is that I can just type my own quest

That looks very cool. I have fond memories of working with analog oscilloscopes. I started college in 2007, and they handled us newbies in EE analog oscilloscopes for learning, as it does not have the (in)famous auto-scale button. Working w

I am wondering if anyone here is programming targeting old hardware as a hobby. It is something I am thinking of looking into.

OpenSuse is such a great base OS, everything is cohesive, but I really wish it had more packages. Flatpak covers most of its shortcomings but sometimes you need something a bit unusual or that does not pair well with Flapak. I am currently

Trying to find an affordable camera / baby monitor that was both secure and offline was a tough one for me, it seems every single consumer oriented camera has a remote access functionality (= a backdoor) nowadays, and the baby monitors

For me it was Windows 11 not supporting hardware. I moved to Fedora in the beginning of this year for work (while using it at home for quite a while). After seeing SharePoint.exe using 1GB and 100% of the CPU today for over 12 hours I’m ser

Agreed, I was born in 1989 and remember it, so it was a thing even 10 years later. Dead channels only truly died after digital TV became the standard.

You could go the same way as the study, flip a coin to use AI or not, write down the task you just did, the time you thought the task took you and the actual clock time. Repeat and self-evaluate.

Like the feeling of the command line being always faster than using the GUI? Different ways we engage with a task can change our time perception. I wish there was a simple way to measure energy spent instead of time. Maybe nature is just op

Since you mentioned your mom, mine is not as tech savvy. At one point she needed a computer to type something and print it, a simple use case so I came up with this idea of setting up a computer that would give me no tech support trouble, s

Good point, somehow if I think of a 30 minutes meeting, 10 minutes of silence sounds great, but seeing a 1 hour block disappear from a 3 hour recording makes me want to use that “free” hour to do something else. Well, I don’t think silence

From my own experience with whisper.cpp, normalizing the audio and removing silence not only shortens the process time significantly, but also increases a lot the quality of the transcription, as silence can mean hallucinations. You can do

If you have a single file C program you can also use Make without a Makefile. I always had the idea that Make reads a Makefile, so when I saw this for the first time it blew my mind. So if you have file.c you can just call “make file” and t
