Some of these things could happen, but I don’t see Rosetta being kept around indefinitely. Keeping compatibility layers around becomes increasingly expensive with time, encumbering OS development and encouraging devs to never update their a

Having tracked API changes fairly closely on macOS and iOS for many years now, I can’t think of too many that were just pointless furniture shuffling. Nearly all of them were to enable addition of new features or to improve developer QoL in

This has been my experience. Nobody who has looked into Mars inhabitation at any depth considers it a “plan B”, at least not on any timescale relevant to those alive today — there’s maybe some value as insurance against a planet-killer aste

I’m kinda surprised that no fork of Firefox has added both global and domain-scoped toggles for web feature support. I know there’s flags in about:config but that only covers some things and isn’t very user friendly. That’d let users turn s

Things like this seem niche enough to safely put behind a permission dialog. 99.9% of sites/web apps have no legitimate need for this functionality.

Depends on the video chat service being used, but in some cases you can force them to use a codec with GPU accelerated encode/decode by running the web version in Safari, which reduces CPU load and heat a lot. It might’ve changed since

Yep, a lot of laptops were 16:10 up through the mid-late 2000s, especially workstation and business laptops. By 2010 or so that’d given way to the HD marketing craze that plagued laptops with those terrible 1366x768 panels that doggedly per

Most of the bigger laptop manufacturers are now on 16:10 (Lenovo, Dell, ASUS) or even 5:4 or 3:2 (HP Dragonfly, MS Surface, Framework 13). Apple has been 16:10 since the early 2000s, only having made one 16:9 model (11” MBA). 16:9 is mainly

Same, moving the alpha cluster off-center drives me crazy not just in laptops, but also on desktop setups. It’s uncomfortable and awkward. Not that people who like numpads shouldn’t also have the option, but it really should be an option .

I like to develop in platforms’ “preferred” frameworks when possible and am not really interested in solutions trying to be a “silver bullet”. In the case of Windows I find the design language of Win11 actually pretty nice and would like to

That’s certainly a valid weakness, but at least getting up and running on Swift’s most native platforms is straightforward. One wouldn’t expect C# and Windows App SDK on Windows to be as much of a struggle as it is.

Swift’s syntax I think also makes it more approachable for people coming from other languages. Rust by contrast is rather intimidating looking for anybody without a background in C++.

Microsoft has a lot of baggage they’re dragging around, though. Getting started on C# and Windows App SDK sucks a lot for example, because everything you google about them returns boatloads of results for myriad incarnations of C#, .NET, an

It’s not that I’m shrugging bugginess off, I legitimately am not encountering these things. I restart Xcode maybe once every 1-2 weeks, if that. Maybe I’ve just learned how to not anger it? Android Studio (IntelliJ) on the other hand I’ve r

It makes sense that UIKit is more solid, because not only does it have 17 years of its own history, but builds upon the legacy of AppKit which stretches back another 20 years. By comparison SwiftUI is still quite young. Haven’t touched Flut

Xcode is fine as long as you don’t have a ton of Obj-C ↔ Swift bridging going on and avoid XIBs/Storyboards, with writing UIKit in pure code being the most stable option (SwiftUI still needs some time in the oven). Writing idiomatic Sw

I miss Swift enums when writing Kotlin. Kotlin enums are more restricted in that associated values can’t differ between cases, which limits their usefulness and means that much of the time what you want are instead sealed classes. There’s a

It’s not hardware alone for certain. You need good software and hardware, with the latter defining the upper bounds of how good the former can be. I’ve experienced the reverse with macOS running on generic laptops via hackintoshing. Potat
