Research shows that listening to music engages the creativity part of the brain so it's not used for the work you do at the same time. Headphones are NOT an adequate substitute for a writer office for a creative knowledge worker.

Open offices don't look modern. The steno pool from a '50s enterprise was open office. Open office allows companies to save dozens of dollars per employee in rent per month, which is visible and measurable. Creativity and producti

Yes, the "small group office" is my favorite! I had that in 2006 and it was great for teamwork. If I can't have that, I'll take a small private office with a door that closes. Although the least time I had that was, I th

It's easier to just rent what you own. Surer way to make a profit, and you keep what you own no matter what. Hence, why the term "rentier class" is actually meaningful, even though it's from a disreputable economic tradi

And it's even worse in the 1% of the 1% circles, which are the real "aristocracy" that can tell politicians what to do. (Note: there are 30,000 people who are top 1% of top 1% in the US!)

Square root of color sounds like gamma encoding. He had a linear color, and wants to store it as sRGB; raising it to 1/2.2 is "correct" but sqrt is close enough. (Or it's just for tone mapping.)

We used to have a sign in the office: "Absolutely no chrome spheres over checkerboard planes." (First day it went up, I wrote a ray tracer from scratch in C in two hours :-)

I'm more of a recording engineer than a guitarist (member of the AES for many years.) Shitty digital pedals from 20 years ago sound shitty, I agree! Well modelled digital effects, however, can these days give you anything an analog ped

ADC, MCU, DAC, done. Cheaper, too -- I think 50 cent ARMs can do that these days. Any pedal that isn't digital today is just nostalgia (like tube headphone amps and the like.) Digital is the clear better choice even for sound shaping.

Although I really wish there was a better alternative to the BS170 in the same TO package, because BS170, too, is old tech and has high Rdson.

200 miles "only"? How many days of the year do you actually drive more than 100 miles? If it's many, then electric is not yet for you yet, unless your destinations are near the Supercharger network.

"by 2020 there will be $ 190 per kWh and $ 20 per kWh less than $ 100 per kWh." Wat? Anyway, we already know this. I'm hoping for third party battery packs by the time I need a fresh set for my 2011 Leaf. (Still years away)

To be fair, my hash table implementations always keep a nth-key iterator cache, to make the default case of 0..n fast. If the standard library doesn't do this, I'd call that a miss in implementation.

If a check in breaks the build or breaks production on deployment, it should be rolled back within minutes. Trunk and production must always be healthy, and if you commit poorly tested code, you are doing nobody any favors.

Trunk only goes well with continuous deployment. If each increment in deployment is small enough, then you know exactly when things break and rollbacks are easy. The 3-2-1 system where you develop for 3 months, then merge for 2 months, then

Global temperature will rise enough to disrupt the global food supply somewhere between 20 and 50 years from now. The catastrophe will be seen in famine and war over resources, not in higher flood insurance cost and taxes to pay for levees.

You should never, ever, create one thread per socket. The choice is between select, polled IO, or events. Sadly, UNIX doesn't have a good unified asynchronous IO model, like OVERLAPPED and IOCP on NT.
