I don't play the lottery for expected value, I play it for variance. No other "investment" comes even close. So, spending $1 of investment on that buys a lot of potential upside.

I'm all for solid negotiating tactics, but if you consider telling an untruth, you are not welcome on my team. You may still find other teams in the world that you can dupe, but in the end, I expect lies to hurt your overall prospects

You're suggesting less than 100 for iOS Dev, and above you someone is suggesting 150+ for devops/sysadmin. That ratio seems quite skewed compared to other sources of data on the web. Are you very junior, or talking about a non-pri

By federal law, an employer cannot discriminate or retaliate against employees for discussing compensation. One of the good things that unions made happen in the past before they made themselves their own worst enemies. Some companies treat

Copyright infringement is in the criminal code. They actually downloaded and modified the files. That's not just server fees!

I grew up in the North. As a kid, parents took me hiking on snowstorm mountains. I've shoveled a fair share of snow. Whenever a series gets to the inevitable slog through frozen sleet, I tune out. There is nothing interesting there.

There is nothing on the web able to even enter the same ballpark as Photoshop. Separately, when on travel, a web connection for your photos may be very hard to find and/or expensive. Separately, again, Google photos downscales my photo

Having less crap in by default reduces the attack surface area. Having a smaller libc makes it easier to audit. (It still needs to actually be audited of course)

The whole point is: Do not run with glibc! If you need something that's not available, build it.

The rest of the civilized world has known that rehab (and social/mental support) is cheaper and more effective than prison for > 30 years. But the "tough, not supportive" meme in US policy keeps warring people, time, and m

"Defensive Programming is a well-regarded technique in software engineering." No. No, it's not. Fail early, fail fast, crash loudly, and then react. That, plus deep validation testing, is how you build robust systems. Trying

While Atmel MCUs are nice and robust (especially avr-gcc and avr-libc are great advantages) they seen like quite high cost. Cheaper ARMs probably are eating their lunch. Meanwhile, I've never been friends with the microchip Dev tools.

How about "stop pumping out thoughtless unresearched crap, and create valuable content that lasts and people will pay for?" (Or is the number of people who value their time so they pay for quality just too low?)

You can hang a /lot/ of diffusors and add bass traps and the interior soundscape will change and feel more intimate (and your TV/stereo will magically sound better!) But that doesn't change exterior noise transmission.

"Expensive" is in the eye of the payer. Do you think a few thousand is expensive? A developer absolutely does. Also, it takes more space, so doing it after the fact may lower your ceiling more than you're comfortable with (as

The role of the legal system (and government) is to keep those worth the most, safe. As a consequence, it may sometimes also protect regular people because that makes the society that feeds and supports them safer. But make no mistake, 1 th
