It's worth saying that the OU model partly works because of an economy of scale (a small module for the OU probably has a couple of hundred students, many have thousands). A huge amount of work is put into making the modules high quali

I've done lots of volunteering teaching programming to kids and recommend this for Python - it is pretty much foolproof to install which is a major thing of you only have an hour and a half session and you can get pygame working on it

I always feel I have to qualify, because when you say you have a DPhil, people often don't know what you are talking about! Technically I have a DPhil not a PhD though even though they amount to the same thing.

Peter was so incredibly supportive. He wasn't my DPhil supervisor (a DPhil is the Oxford equivalent of a PhD) but he urged me to start writing up and spent an hour with me each week during that period encouraging me to get my DPhil fin

When I worked in crypto 20 years ago there was a journal like this which took papers that were only a few paragraphs long for quick results. I think it was called Electronics Letters.

I should add that it's actually the speaker and microphone that I am most excited about in terms of the potential for interesting new projects for kids. Crocodile clips and headphones were quite cumbersome, especially for kids. Althoug

I've got quite a bit of experience of doing coding stuff with kids - I set up the CoderDojo at The National Museum of Computing in the UK (paused at the moment), have run a Code Club at our local library, have two kids myself and am a

I discovered that the proof of a fundamental proposition in my maths PhD thesis had a mistake in it two weeks before my viva, after I had submitted. Not sure if that was a better or worse time to discover it! After a rather stressful few da

I've got a PhD in maths and can translate symbols into concepts in my brain much quicker than words into concepts in general. Also writing symbolically forces a rigour on the writer. I've been trying to read some semi-mathematical

This is tricky because practices aren't just random sets of poses. I don't know much about yoga sequencing - maybe you could generate a reasonable set of rules as to how to combine poses but it doesn't feel trivial to me. Als

It's about socialising with like-minded people though isn't it? I used to enjoy the mix of semi-intellectual discussion about the book and socialising at the book club I used to go to.
