That while this looks like a good extension to CoffeeScript, it's unfortunate that Haskell's type syntax was appropriated when the relationship between contracts and types is tenuous at best. There are good uses for static type checkers and

Not hardly. The runtime can detect that a function invocation violates a post-condition only after all of that function's side-effects have been run.

We haven't tried recruiting from PSU ourselves, but we probably should. Galois ( http://corp.galois.com/ ) recruits students from PSU's CS program. My colleagues from PSU's mathematics dept have also been a pleasure to work with.

I have no idea where they are now, but we were neighbors once: http://blog.phpfog.com/2011/07/25/want-to-be-the-next-php-fo... Before we were at PIE, our company worked at cafes. I guess you could say we scaled from our home offices to a

It's already here. Our company (AppFog) was founded in Portland and we just secured our Series B. We have offices in the same building as JanRain and yet another co-working space. In Old Town or the Pearl District, there are startups on eve

Why raise so much snark straightaway about keywords, and then gripe about the silly ones later? I've written thousands of lines of JavaScript, and a coupla hundred of CoffeeScript. CS is a usable, rather polished JS overlay, but I only unde

I've used this trick to forward to a Twisted Conch daemon running as a non-root user. However, I would never consider this approach for load balancing.

This isn't exactly the factory pattern. It reminds me more of the service classes in Eric Evans' Domain Driven Design. It seems the author is addressing the problem of adding too many side effects to the models themselves.

Enumerable ids are an unfortunate weakness in the Rails + MySQL stack. This is good. I'd also like an easy way to use UUIDs instead of incrementing integer primary keys.

Exactly. You can pass Maybe objects in Ruby as a convention, but the extra layers of indirection probably aren't buying you much. There is no way to enforce the contract.

Look, startups aren't built with programming languages. Languages are a part, but you need to think more about people. In the early stages you need developers who are leaders, and who have a proven track record of shipping code. Work with t

JRuby's FFI implementation is great, but I've had about as much success with MRI, so I test my FFI libs on MRI 1.8.7, 1.9.2 and the latest JRuby. I'm looking forward to the day when Rubinius' FFI converges with the other implementations.

Raw performance doesn't matter to me much as long as I can handle enough concurrent requests, and serve as few as possible with Rails (and trust me, I've built and maintained a webapp handling 50k+ concurrent connections). A good N-tier arc

It's a nice feature. I had a chance to use it today, and it worked beautifully. Its biggest downside is that you don't have an opportunity to run tests without first pulling the changes into your working copy, so I don't see it coming into
