That's wonderful - I think what you're doing is super important - everyone wants configuration to be easy enough that the automation tools are a comparable effort to doing things yourself! Helping people that go the kubernetes-fr

You should participate in sig-cluster-lifecycle. The conclusion of that sig (or my interpretation of it) was that having a production suitable cluster is - today - essentially orthogonal to having a discoverable build-your own cluster. So

Please note, this is not a supported AWS configuration. This is just a way to run Kubernetes on AWS instances, but it is really just treating them as bare-metal. My advice: You should be using kops or kube-aws for production. (I work on k

If you're on GCE or AWS, GCE PDs or AWS EBS works out-of-the-box (i.e. using kube-up, kops or kube-aws on AWS, kube-up or GKE on GCE). Everything should work, but it's harder to validate / work around every NFS server's

Please note that this guide is _only_ for learning purposes - it makes a lot of decisions that do not follow the recommended production approach. If you're installing for production purposes, you should use one of the existing tools i

I'm not particularly familiar with that github issue. A lot of people in k8s are building some amazing things, but that doesn't mean that the base functionality isn't there today. If you want logs to go into ElasticSearch, k

The docs are more of an encyclopedia: a lot of facts, not a lot of editorializing. Unless you enjoy learning from encyclopedias, I would highly recommend talking to other members of the community on the kubernetes slack (kubernetes-novice,

I probably wrote that support (or at least maintain it), and you shouldn't ever have needed to add a script to format your disk: you declare the filesystem you want and it comes up formatted. If you didn't open an issue before pl

Personally I care about the security of the server (is it written in a language that historically has a good or poor track record), and I care a great deal about the client. The Slack client regularly pauses for me while I am typing, random

If "cloud" is AWS, you should join the kubernetes slack sig-aws channel. Lots of community people figuring out those kinks together.

I think of GRPC as HTTP/JSON with most of the gotchas fixed for me. HTTP2 makes things like concurrent requests easy. Protobuf fixes schema problems (and I think is technically replaceable if you love your JSON). With the GRPC/

This frustrates me greatly, only because I agree with you so vehemently :-) We have an open issue tracker where real decisions are made, and so engineers will argue about different approaches. Compare to alternatives, where you see demos

I do a lot of work for k8s on AWS (e.g. I'm to blame for the original under-the-hood document). I agree with most of what you've said we need to improve on, and we are working on it! We added a bunch of ELB configuration options

I'm glad you posted it - thanks! My understanding is that with the timing of the US holiday, it made more sense to hold off on the official announcement for a few days. So that's why there aren't more announcements / re

I'd be very interesting in hearing more about this. I tried using both the Consul and etcd Raft implementations as libraries. I found the Consul library much easier to interface with. But it was my impression that the etcd library wa

It sounds like TrailDB works particularly well with storing data into S3, so what do you use to buffer incoming data before it is written in TrailDB? Kinesis?

If you have an existing project that uses MongoDB, MongoDB has a lot of unusual behaviors that are difficult to reproduce (and not very well specified). Sorting on array values is tricky, for example. For new projects, I agree with you!

It isn't clear that they wouldn't get that same performance by caching the blobs locally. In my experience, you would, with much higher reliability and scalability.

It's actually a relatively easy problem (compared to say a full POSIX filesystem) - I mentioned elsewhere in these comments a blog post where I implemented a fairly good solution. The objects are essentially immutable and content-addr

Right, but it doesn't really matter if you have objects stored twice (or more) I believe. The next GC will clean it up anyway.

The functionality is driven by the labels on the nodes & volumes. So if your bare metal setup adds the same labels to the nodes & volumes, it will work identically. We can apply these labels automatically on GCE & AWS (or any c
