Cheese uses lots and lots of milk. There are questions of ethics (the treatment of dairy cows is often less than stellar) and carbon footprint (cheese is worse than pork, for example.) I'd really love to see some good alternatives, too

Yeah. We have a 112 app in Finland, for making emergency calls and relaying your location. Maybe it's been made at least partially unnecessary by phone network features, but anyway. It's one app I absolutely never ever use except

You can disable that (Settings → Apps → App Store → Offload Unused Apps.) It's a nice feature, but it would be even nicer if you could pin some apps to prevent their offloading even if you haven't used them in ages.

I don't think the parent was asking for server side macOS containerization, but desktop. It'd be nice to put something like Cursor in a sandbox where it really couldn't rm -rf your home directory. I'd love to do the same

It used to be it was easy to tell apart Mac and Windows users by em dash usage. Now apparently Mac users are considered LLMs.

One thing that's always brought up in these discussions, because it's worth bringing up, is the file format of the macOS image editor Acorn: https://flyingmeat.com/acorn/docs/technotes/ACTN002.html

Doesn't Elizabeth run even deeper than the current ones, though? Certainly seemed so in the elevators of the Whitechapel station. And it's not like you could replace the current lines without building the new one first and I bet t

Netflix had a similar oddity, also in Finland: if I recall correctly there's an account language setting, and you have to set it to English to see Kim's Convenience. No need for a VPN, no need to claim you're in another count

Nothing, as long as you're fine funding the exploits of a ketamine fueled edgelord who is throwing his resources behind far-right parties in multiple countries. They could just not buy those services. That is a completely viable way fo

I use Sonos with Apple Music. Sonos has always been worse than Apple's app at browsing and searching (no idea who to blame for this, not the point), but I'd still use because it freed my phone/computer from the streaming duti

I wonder how that's counted; is it ownership or access? In Finland most apartment buildings have shared spaces with a washer and a dryer where you can book time for free. Doesn't mean everyone relies on them, but many people don&#

I work in both too and will take Xcode any day of the week over AS. It has plenty of downsides but it's fast and surfaces errors well. YMMV.

Right now, viewing the AI slop slowly filling the web, it's hard to see the gain, though. It's possible things will improve, but it's just as possible that guiding the tools will take skills most people will never master, jus

Yeah I have high hopes for the new Foundation. The current open source Foundation is OK but it doesn't quite match what's there on Apple platforms and makes it all a bit difficult. Having one shared implementation should improve t

Sandi Toksvig made the point in a QI episode that if you use IIII, you get a pleasing symmetry with the number of Vs and Xs on a clock face. Four numbers with only Is, four numbers with a V and four numbers with a X. I'd be surprised i

One inexact wording here I noticed: "Swiping right from the left edge of the screen does the same as pressing the Back button." If you're implementing that yourself, it's important it's not a swipe gesture, it'
