If you watch the video of Alexander's testimony, he says "potential terrorist events" not attacks. So these could have just been meetings among people with fringe political views. I'm not buying it.

I think this is normal everywhere in the US. I expect this has little to do with SF and more to do with the fact that many people all over the country, regardless of income level, are living far beyond their means and lack the discipline t

I applaud these DIYers. If there's one thing my PhD stint taught me, it's that the high stakes nature of dead ends in one's science career has forced most scientists to be extremely conservative in what they write grants for

I wish twitter would do this. All reasonable variants of my name and initials are held by folks who haven't used the platform since ~2010.

I looked into trying something like this and abandoned the idea after a little research into the power issues and realizing what an ergonomic disaster it would be for me. Props to this guy, though, for following his dream.

I think the default HN theme could be improved with tasteful typography, but this alternative offering sacrifices too much information density. Dropping from 21 to 8 items above the fold on my MacBook isn't acceptable to me. Without the g

This post seems to miss the point that the two choices address completely different goals. Do you want to be a professor? Better get that doctorate. Want bags of money? Better work on your idea for the Next Big Thing. Both paths have ups

I agree with the author that pushing kids into STEM for STEM's sake is stupid. In particular, there is no shortage of scientists, which is why they work insane hours and make fast food wages well into their 30's. We already have enough pe

This is a huge step in the right direction, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm disappointed about the BS in CS requirement. Plenty of people with BS degrees in other technical fields probably could pass a fair placement/entry examination

A bedroom is where your bed is. I've never rented a place with closets, so I think that's pretty common -- especially in older buildings.

As much as it saddens me to say this, I think this needs a CAPTCHA to keep the "hackers" from spamming it to oblivion. Cool idea, though.

I agree 100%. This is why I keep all my crappy old code... to see how far I've come. Sustained practice makes a big difference in a short time, but you don't always see the progress unless you've got old code to compare with.

My N=1 advice for aspiring PhDs is: you probably shouldn't go. Outside of CS, the prospects are shitty for all but the rockstars; might as well save yourself 5-10 years of slave wages by not getting the degree.
