This is a good idea - Junio understands git. Linus understands git too, but you only get insight out of him when someone screws things up badly.

This is extremely dubious! I trust comparatively coarse rock dust much more than ultrafine marker dust with I'm-not-sure-what in it.

Reading mathematical papers is an acquired skill that needs practice. Writing them also is, but the skills exist somewhat independently.

Nothing in git is dangerous except push. This book advocates pushing quite often, making its title pretty accurate. :)

You've activated my pet peeve! A shirt with buttons, cuffs, and a collar is called a "shirt" without modifiers, or a "dress shirt" if you are in an aggressively casual-dressing context where someone thinks it means

Heaviside was somewhat written out of history because he was considered a crank during his lifetime. His reputation is basically rehabilitated these days, but it's only physicists/mathematicians/engineers who have heard of hi

Someone also pointed out that people have called monads "programmable semicolons".

It's easiest for ? (conditionals) and ! (black magic), but it's not ever really completely arbitrary. (Some of this may just be stuff I made up rather than the actual etymology, but that's what you asked for and it's use

Yeah - we are homoiconic (twigs are nouns), but we aren't actually Lisp. I think with training wheels it probably pays off to be excessively empirical. See the situation in Haskell where the only reason "map" only maps over l

We definitely don't have Linus's streak of user-interface malice. (Git-related mental carnage has taken its toll on many urbit developers as well, alas.) What you suggest reminds me of Lisp's infamous "M-expressions"

The mismatch comes about because Urbit is currently for Urbit developers, and will be for a while - and even by those standards it's in alpha. The path from , say, "merge this code to a desk manually" to "click this butt

You should really press the fmap thing - the most common reason given for it not just being map is that "newbies might get confused". A coalition of newbies confused by the unnecessary distinction would do wonders here.

No markdown about it - it's a ford page, and the example code is actually compiled and evaluated along with everything else. Urbit is secretly much cooler than you give it credit for...

How can we be sure that this article isn't a deep-cover "fake review" for Yelp? It tells a convincing story and manages to throw in Yelp's huge music selection - I mean, its effectiveness at removing fake reviews.

The actual source is this blog post http://alexkrupp.typepad.com/sensemaking/2013/12/a-brief-int... , which has mutated over time into "full of backdoors", apparently. As for the original statement

This is exactly the opposite of what is the case. Anselm implicitly assumed that it was possible for God to exist, but Gödel proves it as a theorem (theorem 2 on the Wikipedia page).
