The typing aspect is really not a problem to me, but I get what you mean (also, "strong" typing is different from "static" typing). It seems also that staged compilation is becoming more and more used in statically typed

Tail-merging doesn't only apply to recursive functions. As soon as you don't need to store intermediate result, you can jump to another function without allocating a frame.

It seems you need to add a semi-colon after the line (the AST was empty). A minimal program is simply "();", and compiles into something even more complex. A big part of it looks like runtime setup/cleanup code, common for al

Some time ago at University, we had to develop a puzzle solver in FP. In the report's introduction, I wrote something like "In this project, we must code imperatively in the functional programming language OCaml" . The joke

Yes, more like multi-methods, except for standard qualifiers (:around, :before, ...) and user-defined ones. OTOH, Clojure allows you to define a custom dispatch function.

No, I was talking about (Common) Lisp's generic functions ( http://clhs.lisp.se/Body/m_defgen.htm ). I realize I did not give enough context. Define a generic function: (defgeneric garnish (what with-what))

I think pjmlp knows about this. The important word was "require", which makes a lot of difference. If you don't guarantee TCO at the language level, you can afford to emit code that performs other useful things (like debuggin

I agree. The Lisp dialect page for example, has: - inaccuracies (e.g. word separator in CL depends on current readtable), which is understandable given the very terse format - missing cases (e.g. no compiler for CL?) - and factually wrong e

That's why you actually won't find many instances of such patterns in practice. Either you refactor to have structures/classes, or you define your own accessors. Besides, if you are using CL, FIRST, SECOND, THIRD, ... , TENTH

Interesting, thanks. I am right that this will extract consecutive views of the original array as pairs of (item, slice) elements? I guess array elements need not be copied, but there will still be a slight memory overhead, right? or is it
