I sometimes think of how Earth is so OLD. It’s a third of the age of the Universe. That is just mind boggling. While I have trouble mentally grasping ages on the magnitude “billions”, I do know what a third is. It’s a very sizable chunk. An

Cheap, slow (as an operating system medium at least), and unreliable. They're the modern day floppy disk. The one upside is that the space is cheap and quite plentiful.

It's a scary power for sure, given how centralized around a few services to have a voice that the Internet has become. Of course, there are more resilient solutions like Mastodon or even Darknet but they are geek solutions that the pub

I think the web is already the corporate-agnostic way to do apps in. If they lack some device features I think this is a technical limitation and a different topic. Things have got so much better in that regard already in just the last 5-10

The MiSTer can do this. It can do MC68020 and will meet and surpass A1200 performance with AGA, and RTG graphics support is in fact there as perhaps the most recent major update. Yes, in 16 bit color and all with very good performance. And

This looks like it was written with the intent to “win” the simplicity battle in mind. Nothing on interfaces or goroutines.

I'd look at the algorithms here. Looking a bit fishy with sometimes quite serious differences...

The article is from 2007, right in the middle of Ballmer's lead when I think the writing on the wall seemed much different from today. :) Hell, didn't the Microsoft stock take a jump when Ballmer left before investors even knew wh

Strange how neither Periscope nor Vine, both getting pretty popular early on (lots of celebrities used Vine and Twitter were getting quite some traction) are now no more. Meanwhile Musicaly/TikTok did the basically same once more, and

I think it is a new attempt at AMP? AMP 2.0? But I also think this one will be killed in a few years. A big point with stories is to have you publish them to the friends _who care_ in a network. A social network. A user googling to get to a

For some reason Microsoft keeps doing dark themes like this. Same in Windows 10. Pitch black against text. Do they even let designers do this job or is it just devs checking in code? A designer should know about these things by heart.

Agreed — don’t use the default subreddits. They’re cancer. But I’ve had a great time at the Formula1 subreddit and people are crazy at MechanicalKeyboards. I’m sure you’ll love a knitting group if you enjoy that. Go by your specific interes

I'm not sure if this is great or crazy! I try to not be swayed by the handpicked examples because this at least _feels_ like a design that could get messy once you try to do the particularly gnarly regexeps that this library claims it

Apple has already launched the Macbook Pro 13" M1 which does come with a fan for probably less throttling. The 16" version wasn't updated so I'm thinking they're planning something special for those.

It's a radical decision yes, but also so very Apple-like. And I wonder how much of this wild architecture change is also behind the improved performance here.

I thought the issue leading to this was AVIF decoding complexity but the goal of this project is apparently roughly parity with AVIF decoding performance. Is encoding performance of still images such a big deal? I thought these problems wer

I'm thinking of buying the Raspberry Pi 400 and I see Ubuntu MATE indeed has a 64-bit Raspberry Pi port. While the "400" apparently has some compatibility issues in some scenarios, it's essentially a higher clocked Pi 4.
