Two million rows in tables are not a problem even for old databases (I'm thinking of mysql 5.1)... Are you confident on your indexes, normalization, etc?

Basic bit and byte knowledge, like some other "foundation" stuff. Basically, that everything in computers are numbers under the hood. A bunch of things I can just think where the bit and byte stuff has helped me: - Database struct

Where exactly is your bottleneck right now? Database queries? I mean, where those >300ms go, foreach request or just some of them?

You can get cheaper domains, i.e. Porkbun.com is running a 3 per user $4.15 for .com (just looked, I'm happy with them)

A pretty amount of tools still use Perl under the hood and I'm pretty sure some of the "granted, they just work" tools that we're used to be just there or install, use Perl in some way. Two examples I can give in my case

Yeah, it could be the case and then I was wrong about it being discontinued

Probably you want to try out PCem when dosbox doesn't do the trick. Was a lot of fun for me! I made a small page about PCem here: https://juangacovas.info/doku.php/windows/howtos/pcemu-page

Friend of mine. Slim framework not updated anymore. Cannot make it work in recent php versions, so a fragment of a big corp needs to be maintained and isolated. I know, happens everywhere

+1 and I'm sure the article could inspire others to do the same with other stacks. I like how it compares to other similar stack where OS is CentOS, serverside lang is just PHP and some other layers added, like HAProxy and/or Varn

I bought a HP stream with 128GB internal storage for 199 € and it's serving me well because of weight (1 kg) and purpose (writing, connect to remote servers via ssh). Being a Celeron you can't do fancy things but it's ok. You

In terms of PHP, the strange thing here is you didn't get any errors (at least in logs). The default behaviour in webhosts is having PHP "display_errors" to off (so "blank pages", 500), BUT error_log enabled to some

It's a matter of balance, always. A thin line. And dogmas that people on teams follow (we all do in some way). Not invented here syndrome, always create a class, always put a class in its own file, premature optimization blablah, don&#

Have you tried the good, old "rsnapshot"? If you master passwordless ssh with rsync, it's a breeze to setup

And if sometime in the future Perl is no longer included by default, it will be installed "by dependency" just when you install packages like rsnapshot, CSF firewall, etc. and probably a big bunch of tools that nobody would guess

+1 for the sync/conflicts resolution of Keepass. Also I think that putting a shared database (file) on a shared folder at the office if needed is an overlooked feature..

My case is the opposite, went from videogames to "boring" B2B web apps. I find myself applying techniques for performance and other stuff (almost everything) to another domains and it is fun, at least for more than 10 years now. A
