"APL, and its successor J [...] provide a notational interface to an interesting model of computation: loop-free, recursion-free array processing." How is APL loop-free, exactly? Later they say: "Under this implicit lifting,

I thought it was super cool when I found out you could overload operators in Julia. I wonder if you could re-create some APL-like syntax that way.

Wansink applied to the phd program I'm in for graduate school, and didn't get it, and then he applied for a professor position at my school and didn't get it. One of the faculty members told me she thought it was "a miss

I wondered what was new about this particular implementation (since I've seen several others, notably the one this code is partially based on, from Justin Johnson). From the paper: "Our contribution is to constrain the transforma

Wow. I did not read this carefully enough the first time: https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/9173 I had no idea that Dropbox Paper supported Latex until reading your comment. That makes Paper even more awesome.

Man, it's been 23 hours since this was posted, and lots of negative feedback. With that intro, you might expect me to be different, but sadly, I'm not. If you haven't read the graphic novel about Honest Tea, I recommend it.

Your pricing is close to 1/2 of AWS. Assuming you scale, would you stay profitable? How? I think the front page lacks clarity. "GitHub for Machine Learning" suggests a framework for hosting and cloning machine learning mod

That makes sense. I guess I don't work enough in teams to have instantly seen the value. It's weird, actually, I see a lot of references to collaboration, either indirectly while reading articles, or directly on videos promoting

This feels like it has potential. Can someone give me a specific use-case where this should shine? The major worry I have is that it will turn out like the Citrix system at my university. It's hard to give all the reasons why Citrix

Agreed. I also think we need to allow ourselves room to question our moral foundations and make attempts at reconciling them with the foundations of "the other side," whoever that is for each of us.

I second this. I read a paper yesterday and the figures produced by R clashed visually with the typesetting style. The Tikz ones are so, so, nice.

Good points. I will admit that what I said: "you can't build anything serious with it" is too extreme. I'm not sure how to count Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha, though. Still, Emerald Cloud Lab clearly gets credit.

You could also use current search algorithms but add a penalty for redundancy. Or perhaps group similar results. I've always like the idea of column-based web results. I suppose some of what Google does has this flavor.

Two times in my life, I've gotten deeply excited about Mathematica. The first time I wanted to use it for economics homework as an undergraduate. (Don't worry, I did it on paper first.) The second time, I wanted to use it for m

Ironic that I visited HN deliberately to avoid working on my dissertation? I've been off of FB for years. This article seems overblown to me. Though, yesterday on NPR I heard a prof speaking about a survey where 48% of teenagers who

Very cool. I like the idea enough that I want to find a reason to use it, but none comes to mind immediately. The real problem, it seems, is not being able to get something on the web, but getting anyone to look at it.

I have a hunch (definitely not an assertion) that even if there are effects from Montessori school early on, they wash out over time, and the major factors afterward are socioeconomic status and habits of parents, and subsequent education (
