These are the kind of issues that I hate dealing with and would make me consider hosting on a platform as a service like Heroku. Does Heroku have auto sharding IDs built in?

I am so glad Google is putting AT&T (and the other broadband providers) in the hot seat. Sadly I don't think San Francisco will get Google Fiber anytime soon. Why is it we don't even have Verizon FIOS?!

I have so much respect for the internet archive. To me the internet archive represents an entity that really understands the "Internet" and aligns closely with a lot of the ideals of free speech and information access. Plus the wayback mach

Really great presentation/slidedeck. For me I still feel MongoDB is a semi niche solution. I rather go with a standard SQL database unless there is a specific reason why you need NoSQL.

Of course she is going to get internal flak: she's basically saying the current management is incompetent and needs to raise the bar because she can't continue to blindly trust the hiring decisions that are being made on a day to day basis.

Would anyone be interested in a mailing list / group for bay area django developers? I feel like there are a bunch of us but we are all scattered!

Are you seriously telling web developers they don't deal with learning a new tool almost every day?! How many damn Javascript libraries do we constantly integrate and learn? New css like languages (scss, less). Server side languages? I'm sic

Awesome. I am just looking into chat options for our small but growing team. As an aside I think IRC is being sold short on this chart: https://www.hipchat.com/compare Nothing wrong against it since it is mosting a marketing comparison ch

There was a discussion recently about technical literacy (everyone should be taught code). I think this highlights one of the reasons why people should at least be technically literate. Being able to understand complex models for allocation

The battle of which mobile device will over enterprise deployments is still on going. I think Android will win though Microsoft has a strong position. I don't see a winner yet because of one question: Which vendor has the best support? By s

It is very common to allow a support user to impersonate a user. A lot of the enterprise level authentication/authorization software packages support it. As long as the action is logged it doesn't seem worse than anything else.

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that a good deal of how the internet routes traffic is simply determined by trust. Yes there are complicated legal agreements between AS's but when ti comes down to it any AS can advertise any rou

I'm with everyone else in this thread: you screwed up but in reality it is EXPECTED. Do you know why I have backups? Because I'm not perfect and I know one day I will screw up and somehow drop the production database. Or mess up a migration

So what did you use instead? Let me just say having migrations is a "good thing". I know one place that just does SQL stuff by hand when they go to production. Seriously?!

For people developing new platforms I think Django has a great deal to offer and should be a serious contender if you are looking into Python based web frameworks. A few specific things I like about Django: 1. A decent app ecosystem 2. Lots

Didn't Tesla at one point envision giant coils that would basically give you "wireless electricity" through the use of changing magnetic fields? This is cool but I'd be worried if it caught on in any sort of scale.

Is this based on FreeBSD's dummynet? I use to use that a long time ago and it was really cool. I was kind of sad when Linux didn't really have anything close to it.

I didn't even know about the activate command. I just remapped my PATH in my shell to the python virtualenv and do it for all the new users. It makes things easy. The system python is kept clean and I don't have to deal with it.

Regardless of who you think is right the data is kind of indisputable. Unless Tesla is faking the data (which may happen but I really doubt it) it is up to us to determine the veracity of the NYT's article. Is it within journalistic means o
