I wrote some Perl code that improved the look of those buttons (based on Trevor Blackwell's engine) at Viaweb back in 1997. I distinctly remember Paul, Trevor and others gathered around my screen to admire the new buttons. So nobody critici

You said you were interested in methodological ideas, so I'm going to add another comment. Based on the head-to-head rankings of MIT versus other top schools, it looks like MIT should have an Elo rating on your scale somewhere around 1800,

It still seems to me like something is very strange about your MIT ranking; there is probably a bug of some sort. Your own head-to-head MIT vs. Other College pages seem to give results that are inconsistent with your MIT rating of 1688. Ass

Your rankings of colleges by revealed student preferences seem seriously out of line, especially for MIT and Caltech, compared to the academic paper by Avery et.al. that you cite on your web-site. They give a ranking of 1. Harvard 2. Caltec

Every environment is broken in some way or other. Try to make it work for you to do what you want as well as you can. I personally am inspired by all the work that Charles Babbage tried to do and managed to do more than a century ago withou

36...Qd8+ only looks better to a computer. The idea is 37. f6 hxg4 38.Nxg4 gxf6 threatening ...Rh7+ or 37. Kg3 Qd6+ 38. Kh4 Qh6! But Anand's 36...g5+ is much easier for a human to play. It's easier to see White's reasonable responses and ho

Yes, the simplest solution is a 0.1 % tax on short-term trades. It's actually pretty strange that practically everything else one buys is taxed by the government but not shares. No surprise that we get all this useless and dangerous high fr

Anand's victory was one of the best games in world championship history, at least in my opinion. Also, in my opinion, the best sites for chess news are chessvibes.com and "The Week in Chess" at www.chess.co.uk/twic/twic.html.

"Dynamic programming" may not be the best name, but it's well-established, and there's always a cost to proposing another name: fragmentation of understanding. It's better that everybody continue to use the same non-optimal name than having

It's a funny comment, but not really true. The ctangle program would just strip the comments (both C/C++ comments and TeX commentary) out of a .w file and re-arrange the C/C++ code to the order that the compiler would need to see it. While

My guess is that the bias is caused by the black shapes. You can see that each black shape is closer to its bigger "parent" on the left on the next row out than it is to its bigger parent on its right. Also the connection to the parent on t

I use literate programming, and Knuth's CWEB in particular, and I find it fits for me perfectly. Honestly, I think the biggest problem is that most programmers have never heard of it or think it's something like JavaDoc. I find it aston
