Obviously lines of code is a poor metric, but wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_lines_of_code ) would suggest it is not as complicated as: Linux kernel 2.6.35 13.5 million lines of code Windows Server 2003 50 MLOC Mac OS X 10.

An alternative way (but more intuitive) to find approx a / 9 in your head: result = (a x 0.1) + (a x 0.01) + ... so e.g. take a random number, 22103 answer is about 2210 + 221 +22 + 2 = 2455

I run ubuntu 11.10 on a thinkpad and I find that battery life is on a par with Windows. You might want to investigate the ASPM power regression issue; pcie_aspm=force might work for you (or wait for ubuntu 12.04 which cw the 3.2 kernel cont

I use Fabric for my deploys. The process is something like: * Check out to clean directory * Run tests * Zip source * Upload * Unzip * Backup existing (in case of needing rollback) * Deploy static files * Run South db migrations *

The algorithm for determining when writeback from memory to persistent storage is interesting: https://lwn.net/Articles/456904/ (Linked from http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.2 , which has more detail than the HN posted article)

Forget compiling; if (for example) you want to have a couple of meaty java projects open in an IDE plus an appserver plus a db tool you're way over 4Gb before doing any work. And then if you want to run the database as well, or say virtual

gnome-do works perfectly well under 11.10, unity has keyboard shortcuts for window placement (e.g. Ctrl-Alt + Numpad e.g. Ctrl-Alt-6 = window to the RHS of the screen) IMO unity much improved in 11.10 over 11.04
