Don't know why you got downvoted - AFAIK Siri isn't tied to Azure (although it could be using it for storage), but iCloud runs across both Azure and Amazon.

Agreed; the largest advantage of electric car production is the comparative simplicity of the underlying "sled" (can't link directly, but you can see it if you go to http://www.teslamotors.com/models/features#/interior and scroll down to

It's a bit unclear what you're asking - are you looking for historical examples where heightening the contradictions has actually led to a good resolution? Because I was definitely arguing against that. Or examples where it's made it worse?

In politics/activism, this is usually referred to as "heightening the contradictions". That strategy only works, however, if you have a fairly optimistic view of history and progress. If you don't, the strategy is just as likely to produce

Haven't read that one, but I try to re-read Nagel and Newman's at least once a year: http://www.amazon.com/Gödels-Proof-Ernest-Nagel/dp/081475837... One thing I love about N&N is that it's short (160 pages) and the paperback is cheap

Wouldn't eliminating of copyright render the GPL unenforceable? I'd imagine you'd have to fall back to a BSD-style license, which (according to the FSF) is less-free? [not agreeing or disagreeing].

Sorry if my tone came across as being more irritated than I actually was; and I appreciate your clarifications. Also, I didn't notice that you were mentioned in the grandparent; I probably would have interpreted your remarks more charitably

Completely agreed on the crowd-sourcing of typos, that would be very useful. I just got an updated version of Programming Clojure, and the experience was wonderful.

What you're saying makes perfect sense when applied to technical/non-fiction, but as Stross is writing sci-fi/horror, I'm -- to be honest -- a bit irritated by your use of "quaint." What does multiple releases have to do with a mystery nove

Could someeone who is advocating for no time zones please explain how a normal work "day" that crossed actual days work in practice? So you want to wake up at 8 Utc and some else wakes up at 20 Utc. Ok, then they start work on Friday at 21

I thought that was what mmap was for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mmap . And compare http://beej.us/guide/bgipc/output/html/multipage/mmap.html to http://beej.us/guide/bgipc/output/html/multipage/shm.html

You could try this (from an elevated command-prompt), but the general consensus is that it has a small (if any) effect: reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" -v DisablePagingExecutive -d 0x0 -t RE

Yes, I saw the redirection. But "dir" is an built-in command in the Windows shell; is the speed of that command a benchmark-able number? Is the point to compare the speed of "ls" vs "dir", or the underlying OS/file-systems (i.e., posix vs.

Wow, so if you want to test file system speeds, you do it by listing files - I know this just an example, but perhaps it has something to do with the speed of the terminal ? There are a plethora of disk benchmarking tools - I doubt that

And referring back to the original question on C#, you can do this using the "dynamic" keyword - http://achoiusa.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/exploring-c-4-0-mul...

I would imagine for the same reason as wearing two watches doesn't improve your knowledge of the current time. You're more likely to be within the largest margin of error (i.e., the latest time on either of the watches is probably no later

I don't think Azure needs to run Java to succeed, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. And they've been pretty out-front with supporting Java for a while: * Open source SDK for Java (and Eclipse): http://www.windowsazure4j.org/ * Gigaspace run

So, the baked-in async / await wouldn't be useful? For the kinds of apps I'm writing, I can't wait for this - I've made a lot of use of Tasks/PFx, and this really simplifies the mental model for me. In addition, I appreciate that it's consi

It's an interesting concept, but I'd think the video part would be more of a distraction, honestly. The best language-learning idea I've ever seen was a foreign-language MOO/MUD. I worked on one at the University of Bergen (Norway). You ca
