Yes, being an HN reader is definitely a plus. :-) The best way to get an invite is hit us on twitter or facebook (see links from blekko.com). Then we can DM you an invite when we have them ready.

Yes, blekko has a full web crawler, indexer, and some of the query processing code in perl. Some of the innards and query execution are in C++ for speed. Generally we tried to delay the conversion of a component to C++ as late as possible,

Agree...the unrelated photo (stock?) doesn't help the credibility here. That plus the vague story made me think this was content from an article farm. Doesn't seem to be though.

It's an answer to the thread about Mark Zuckerberg still writing code, where TechCrunch asked if Bill Gates still coded 5 years after Microsoft was founded. That's why it was (re)posted.

Robot bans can render your archive.org records inaccessable, zap all your former code 200 urls out of the major search indices, and yes, kill your inclusion in the list of topical sites. Much better to set a temporary Crawl-Delay directive.

Google indexes robots banned sites based on links. But notice that the snippet is gone. Google also won't be able to index HN posts and comments anymore.

It's unfortunate because I often use site: to find old threads on ycombinator. especially since news.ycombinator.com doesn't have its own search facility, external search engines are the old way to comb through old posts here.

At blekko we're building a web-scale search engine in perl. It includes a distributed platform (kind of like bigtable) currently running on ~200 machines (soon to be 700). The total datastore, containing several n-billion page crawls and a

The vote counter is going up like crazy now, and Yahoo is now trumping both Google and Bing. Yahoo was in 3rd place earlier today when I looked. Seems like someone is hitting it with a robot to goose Yahoo's numbers. So much for the data

They can take a phone number too; I give them nnn-555-1212. It's always registered and you get the discount. I use this on vacation - "What's the area code here?" "808..?" "My number is 808-555-1212". Bingo. But yeah, it's a hack.

AP-style news can be dull, but I wish more bloggers would use a bit of the inverted pyramid [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverted_pyramid ] when writing. I wouldn't have clicked if I didn't want to see what the author had to say. But

It's bad form to diss your employer, current or former, in public. Even more so for a senior guy like that. He's leaving one hot company to go work at another - he can talk about the great opportunity at Twitter. He doesn't need to gripe

Trashing may be too strong a word, granted. But it's making public unflattering internal details about a company that employed him. I would be personally irritated if I was this guy's manager. Coming across material like that when researc

It may be entertaining to read internal laundry gripes about a company. But trashing your employer on the way out the door is bad form.

After having run various html/xml/rss parsers against a 1B page web crawl, I'd have to say that it's pretty rare to find ones that can actually pass the web fuzz test. Most seem to have been written from a more spec-driven approach. This

Ow. The triple arrow thing is over the top. The orig UI was nicely subtle and understated. Too much overthinking user experience sometimes isn't good. OTOH, users always bitch about change.
