Thank you for responding. I tend to assume that the anti-proprietary folks go all the way as rms does, and that's unfair of me. Thank you for the perspective.

I wandered, I will admit. I didn't go into that comment with a plan. It grew organically and tapped into some deep-seated feelings. By the end of it, I was kind of scared. I think Act I, the first five paragraphs, are a direct response to t

A rapidly-evolving one where the legal status of jailbreaking an iPhone has changed over the last several years and jailbreaking an iPad remains illegal. AKA: The United States.

What's in your BIOS? What's in your NIC's firmware? What's in the firmware of the router you're wire{d,lessly connected} to? What's in the microcode of your CPU? What's in your south and north bridges? What's in your USB controller? What's

If this film were instead about how proprietary software people, who are never, ever going to disappear, and free software people, who really want them to, could get along and work together for the betterment of computing over ideals, I

Sorry, but you sound like a real wet towel to be around. Shall we take away the coffee makers, too, since those are unnecessary? Let them have a bit of fun at the office.

That was a recent change, and undoubtedly one driven by a Growth team that wants to keep a certain graph going upward so another graph will as well.

A lot of people at Google are north of $500k, I've heard. We're talking engineering and product, not management. I mean, what would you pay someone like Ken Thompson? There are the outliers like him, of course, but I've also heard that ev

Don't forget that Android is built upon Linux. Just because at the core you're speaking largely Unix doesn't mean that you have to show a Unix-like system to the user. Really, you can do whatever you want in userspace.

The first thing I thought of when this bill cleared was the recent news regarding how much Apple pays Tim Cook[1], said to be the highest-paid executive in the country (in total, not just salary). His big RSU grant isn't going to begin vest

I thought the same thing. I think he anticipated our thoughts when he wrote (paraphrased) "it's so egregious, I benefit from it and I want it to end." Maybe, just maybe, I misjudged Arrington a bit.

Since probably more than 99% of Macs are single-user workstations in practice, I'd wager that they got it right, just not for your needs. I like that aspect of X too but I find myself getting by without it. I can also SSH in to my Mac as

You need world-class UI/UX and graphics designers to have a shot, and the FOSS community is criminally short on those. With all the programmers on Hacker News it could probably be written in hours but it would look like shit because code ca

Commentary is all opinion. I shared mine on the comment, as well as voting it down and flagging it. The problem is that it's a cheap Microsoft shot and there are a lot of people that will upvote that, even though it has no place here. I've

This group sounds at least semi-professional. It sounds like they cased the store for a while to analyze the habits of the janitor, picked a really convenient evening for a heist (what's everybody doing on NYE? exactly), knew there'd be a s

Whenever these discussions come up people tend to blur kernel and userspace. It's happening here, and it's not unforgivable since most operating systems package both together. That's actually half the reason Richard Stallman wants you to sa
