Well, the post I responded to included a more or less textbook description of template based rendering. It's a response to a response to this: > The bizarre practice of assigning session keys to visitors and somehow storing the page

I, at least, did not downvote the original post. I assumed it was honest ignorance of the practice I described in my reply.

What's being described above isn't simply template-based rendering (which, yes, essentially everything does), but the practice of building web-software like desktop software and keeping the state of the UI server-side. It ignore

It's... an extremely common accounting term? First day of Accounting 1 or so? It's common enough that it's been used as the title for a pop animated sitcom episode -- Archer (S2E2).

Agreed. As a policy, we don't sign off on supporting things until we feel we have sufficient regression testing for them in our automated qual matrix. DPDK is not there yet.

It's not that their SR-IOV implementations are incompatible, it's more that SR-IOV doesn't imply anything about driver compatibility. It's is a mechanism for exposing underlying hardware (or slices of hardware) to guests

In open source vhost is a pretty good option that abstracts hardware away from VMs and generally performs well. That said, SR-IOV isn't a BAD option if you don't care about live migration of VMs over a lifespan potentially longer

Unfortunately it's a bit more complicated than that, which is why I hate that SR-IOV gets so tied up in this :/ When they say "virtio-net" there they mean virtio-net inside qemu with vhost servicing the queues on the hos

Note that DPDK works just fine with virtio-net on GCE as well, although we have not declared official support for it. In terms of RDMA and bypass messaging, I agree there can be substantial advantages to offloading transport layer message p

With respect to #2 -- "more quickly" could be a bit much, but there are quite a few combination locks (of the sort commonly found on cheap-ass high-school lockers) wherein getting within 2-3 digits of each digit in the combination

My natural reaction to that would've been to leave the school and every locker in it unlocked over the course of a weekend. Not claiming any responsibility for it, naturally, simply observing that it had happened.

We (Google) do both. Having recently done some coding in Swift to implement a little toy Hypervisor, I sorely missed these annotations. By and large the errors they catch are ones I'd be embarrassed to have pointed out in a code review

You are incorrect. If you have many threads each doing small amounts of work before blocking, the kernel will happily switch in another runnable thread when the current thread blocks. This is common in workloads that service network IO usin

Thinking of it that way for single-node configurations (or static collections of multiple nodes) makes sense, yes. A lot of the promise of GCE and GCP generally come from on-demand scalability, autoscaling, serverless, etc. Those become muc
