I only think you should go deep after you learned concepts shallow and wide. It is important that students, very early on, be able to build interesting and meaningful things with their CS skills and experience the associated gratification

I can recall at least 3 startups (non-YC funded) which announced their launch here and went on to gain traction and good blog coverage. The quality of the product speaks for it self really. Some have been good, others weak. Regardless I don

Might also be worth checking the IPs see if they are listed in Spamhaus block list. If they are, then pretty good bet its organized spam. http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/

Are the accounts submitting this stuff coming from a particular IP range? Just a suggestion but you could always block their subnet.

Having a minimum karma or time requirement before gaining the ability to post might help protect HN against this type of spam. Just a thought..

Can anyone confirm this is true? I find it surprising that Linux is widely used for production-type work. What programs are used? I'm a bit skeptical when the author doesn't mention any specifics. EDIT: Assortment of linux film production a

I've heard much the same, although I think this will start to change for the better after the iPhone App Store goes live. My prediction (and hope) is it ushers an era where consumers expect to have the ability to install any application the

UML, or any other sort of high-level design planning, is a bit against the hacker spirit so my guess is you wont find many here who use it. Hacking is more bottom up, start with something simple and just keep iterating it into something lar

It may seem presumptuous, but it is undeniable techcrunch has considerable influence. My only concern is that knowing certain important people from TC now read HN, there might be an influx of spam from people looking for attention. Especial

I wish it was that easy... Raising money beyond bootstrapping is very difficult unless you are referred by a credible source, which is what YC is. Its about the referrals and connections and the associated attention that comes along with th

I recently passed 25 and also quit my day job to work on a startup, so had to enlist my own heath coverage. I did it as an individual and used Blue Cross Blue Shield. I dont know if its the best available in terms of cost, but considering a

Thats correct, you can save your state just before a Service is killed. The onDestroy() method is always called by the OS first. And Android will automatically try to restart your Service, when resources are sufficiently available again. I

Its definitely not RAM. Android devices with significantly less RAM handle it fine. When a Service is scheduled, it is only allowed to run while resources (battery, CPU, memory) are sufficient to keep the critical processes (currently visib

That sentence is taken out of context. Reading the whole post, it is clear that Arrington is referring the importance of recorded music in monetary terms, not artistic.

The fact that user credentials (or any sensitive data) is directly modifiable through a web interface is concerning to me. Shouldn't this logic be protected in the controller layer?
