I'm not defending the sigils because they are terrible, but the reason you can't just get rid of them is that they are actually used. For instance: my @arr = ("Larry", "Moe", "Curly"); my $len = @arr;

That is the perfect programming language landing page. The Hello World example introduces one of their concepts that you might not see every day, then they show a little algorithm, then a practical "stuff you need to get work done"

Yeah "color service" was very confusing. I even tried Googling, could anyone explain the source of that phrase?

Although it wasn't vaccine related, my wife had a similar bill for a similar reason and I learned a couple things: They may be saying the hospital or some provider within it was out of network, challenge this on the grounds it was an e

You're right, though as someone with basic hand tool skills but poor instincts it isn't always easy to tell which projects are that complex before I make a mess of it.

This is where the prudence that led you not to be in a hurry pays off. I've seen decent people gave difficult searches every year for the last 12, there is a randomness to this and a specificity to any individual's job search. But

This idea of auctioning off someone's wife seemed (seems) unlikely to me in a medieval European context (since divorce was hard to come by). What I found was actually weirder: > In medieval Italy and southern France, it was common f

In vim there are a lot of emacs-like plug-ins that reimplement functionality found elsewhere. You can still use the vi style workflow though.

Exactly, because of bad habits developed elsewhere I sometimes find myself puzzling (as an example) "how do I remove HTML tags in vim?" rather than "how do I remove HTML tags? OK, now do that in vim."

This is a terrifying definition of democracy, "you don't get a vote but there is an informal and non-binding channel to lodge complaints." That's not democratic at all!

The post I replied to brought up a very narrow set of features that had been available in vim for a long time.

Code completion, search, cross referencing, and all sorts of other features in vim, emacs, and all kinds of other editors (including Visual Studio) predate LSP by decades. LSP is cool though, an advancement certainly, but it is not a comple

In my brief introduction to it, there seems to be an impedance mismatch between snaps and the entire philosophy of Linux (and Unix more generally). When a program tries to build it's own little world without consideration for the conve

Switching distros is pretty easy. Debian is a classic that will support KDE and will be familiar in some other ways. If you're writing software, the switch will be a great way to see that your code is robust and not too closely coupled

It's not just about what GDP doesn't measure, it is about what it does measure. If everybody buys guns and ammo to prepare for civil war it would be great for GDP but terrible by any other measure.
