It’s not just your phone, and a warrant isn’t always needed thanks to this precedent. Police are able to search without a warrant under many circumstances. For example, they could pull you over, give their dog a command to “hit” on your car

And we will complain about this here on Hacker News and the American public still won't give a flying fuck...I wonder if our "democracy" will stop being such a disappointment in our lifetimes. And I say it in quotes not becau

Probably not, technically, but it's sort of in that (Gandalf The) Grey area where nobody really gives a shit so you'll get away with it. This is just a random project on GitHub, it's not like a major corporation is putting th

Maybe they have a higher reputation but that doesn't mean people like or will buy their consumer products. They still have a huge problem there.

It seems Hyundai doesn’t suffer from these problems, at least now. Is this just a difference in the priorities and expectations of leadership there? FWIW their reliability is generally considered to be nearly on par with Toyota and Honda no

Should you even use microservices? I'd argue probably not. In my experience most people start looking at this because they hate their existing code (often for good reason) and just want to spend less time working with that code. It

Am I honestly supposed to believe they achieved this without employing discriminatory hiring practices? The demographics of people applying for jobs in this industry is so far from 50% that I’m extremely skeptical of this. Although with a c

Biggest issue for me is Twitch, HBO Now, and to a lesser extent YouTube although I've noticed issues with any site streaming video. Even on a gigabit connection and a new $2k desktop, Firefox buffers or the video just goes black and I

It's too late. Firefox already has compatibility issues with sites I use heavily. There's a much better chance I'd use the new Chromium based Edge than Firefox at this point. And with it's usage share dropping...if moral

The biggest problem with Kotlin is also it's biggest strength: excellent interop with Java. This means that you can use all of the Java libraries...but that also makes writing new libraries in idiomatic Kotlin unnecessary, so you'

Rails has so much metaprogramming that static typing isn't really going to get you very far. Type checkers and linters won't know what the hell is going on.

I would not recommend most people to run their own k8s cluster. Even Amazon's EKS is enough of a pain in the ass I don't think it's close to a "define once, forget about it" type of experience. However, this is pret

Because any male dominated space is seen as a threat and must be eliminated, even if men initially gravitated into that space partly due to social rejection outside of it.

Well the people that profit from this kind of narrative haven't gotten enough corporate influence and money from beating us over the head with it yet so it has to continue.

Personally I think an even bigger factor than not feeling welcome, if we're talking about getting people in the door in the first place, is the negative connotations associated with being in this industry to begin with. As far as socia

There is a difference between a disadvantaged person and a disadvantaged group. In my opinion that is the primary issue with prioritizing the needs of disadvantaged groups over the needs of disadvantaged individuals.

It may be better than humans on average, but is it safer than a sober person who is driving responsibly in a similarly priced vehicle? Anecdotally, most accidents I've seen have been caused by at least one driver doing some stupid shit
