I know next to nothing about .net, but this seems like the classic “you’re holding it wrong” excuse to me. If there’s a way to call an api the wrong way and the right way, and both appear to work, large number of developers will implement t

I wonder how much of it is unwillingness to explain rather than the inability to do so? The vibe I got was that the audience was not interested in changing their ways, after all they've been doing things their way for decades with grea

Great article. Although I’ve been a Linux user since the time when stack of Slackware floppies was the prevailing installation media, I just recently learned that libc.so is also an executable.

I think your premise is somewhat off. There might be 20 million hotel rooms in a world, but surely they are not individually priced, e.g. all king bed rooms in a given hotel have the same price per given day.

I believe Xeons still include SGX even today. You’re correct about the consumer CPUs not supporting it anymore.

Yes, the debt weighs heavily around their neck. If it eventually ends up in bankruptcy, will Elon Musk lose control of his beloved x.com domain name for the second time?

On the other hand, maintaining a custom tool vs a patched fork is not that dissimilar, is it? If patching the prevalent tool makes sense otherwise, I wouldn’t worry too much about upstreaming.

Interestingly enough, John Ousterhout was a recently on Book Overflow podcast and he says he uses this very refactoring but on reverse to teach good software design. So it’s good for something!

I bought the Stevens’ book sometime in the 90’s. I believe I still have it, but I haven’t opened it up in years or maybe even decades at this point, so my recollections might be a bit off. The book predates important developments like epoll

Yet the xz attack specifically targeted the packages and nothing else. And it worked, to a point. All I’m saying package maintainers are human and can’t detect everything.

If the language in question disallows function overloading, this distinction becomes very clear. For an example, see Rust option's unwrap_or[1] vs unwrap_or_else. [1] https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/option/enum.
