1) I do remember a post a while back where a Firefox user submitted a bug report due to actually encountering a MITM attack, so not 100% are false positives. (the post: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=353376 ) 2) A minute a day may o

Indeed. If the show has 2.6 million viewers, and they didn't even have a link to click, I am surprised that the traffic was heavy.

> Why? Because of laziness. You are right that you can learn by just investing time, and the grandparent is right that almost nobody will bother when they can play videogames with that time.

Yeah, when I read the book it sounded cool but as I posted it here I wondered why the cops didn't notice in the story.

What you mention doesn't apply to 10 years ago. Maybe 20-50 years ago.

I would like to see more accessible exposition of modern mathematics to the interested public. There seem to be two opposing forces - assuming more prerequisites lets you talk more easily and go into more depth, but cuts your target market

By the way, the author is William Thurston, a renowned mathematician and Fields medalist.

Right, he has apparently solved and proved a short list for OBS3 with the property that X is 3-colorable if and only if X doesn't contain anything from OBS3.

OBS4 is supposed to be a list of all configurations which deny 4-colorability for themselves, and any strictly larger (in both dimensions) configurations. Ie, if (19,17) is in OBS4 then (19+x,17+y) is not 4-colorable either. So given a sha

Never the first time I think about a problem. But sometimes when doing a from-scratch rewrite of a medium-size program, I will understand how everything should be, and it works the first time.

You probably have something like 2^32 ways to seed your RNG. But there are N! possible outcomes of the shuffle, so at most 2^32 of those will appear (one per seed). 2^32 = 4294967296 100! is about 10^158 So for just 100 items, you're alrea

So, the 2 hours is more important than the 5 dollars? I did get caught by the framing, but in retrospect I should have been tipped off by the fact that most wages are > 2.50/hr.

I like Feynman's description, where he actually used 10^x first, just noting that 10^x for small real x was 1 + ln(10)*x (approximating from the derivative), assuming that this worked for small complex values too, and then extended to large

He is using deconstructionist language on deconstructionism itself. This is funny because it shows us that deconstructionism contradicts itself.
