A nation that does not control its borders is no longer a nation. No country on earth behaves that way. Not now, nor in the past. The world was different, of course, but the USA basically (and I thought rather famously) behaved this way u

Thanks. I’ve definitely ‘read’ things like both those ‘cat’s in the past. Even the GNU one is still small enough to be understood. I agree with what you said about larger projects and the intent behind ‘reading’. Linus’s opinion is interest

This is a great reply - thanks. I think this bolsters my sense that we should not be calling this activity ‘reading’ but rather ‘investigating’ or ‘researching’ or ‘understanding’ or something (none of these are perfect - there must be a be

I certainly _do not_ want to denigrate the idea of writing code that's designed to be read and studied - I think that's a great idea, and try to do it. But I've never been really able to 'read' a codebase, and I don

I wonder what was actually asked. I’d say ‘no’ to the question as written in the article too, because it implies that I can’t return it if it is defective or breaks.

That’s still pretty true. Good condition used items on eBay often seem to go for near MSRP - even if it’s easy to get a new one below MSRP from regular retailers! It’s interesting what eBay has done to the used market in general. Before the

The 1998 ‘Power Macintosh G3 All In One’ is an interesting stepping stone to the iMac. Beige, blockier than the iMac, but noticeably curvier than preceding Power Macs. A return to the single unit design, and the first use of translucent pla

Before PV became efficient and cheap enough, it was not uncommon to see ‘solar panels’ on roofs in California that actually contained water pipes rather than silicon. Water circulated through them and was used either as regular hot water fo

Even with the externalities accounted for, if you must use a monitor, it might be better to buy a new one than repair the old one. The replacement parts have a footprint, and a newer monitor might use so much less power in operation that it

I find it hard to deliberately leave a book unfinished even if I’m not enjoying it. I think it’s because there are definitely books I’ve slogged through the first half of, but ended up loving by the end. Perhaps this new book I’m not really

Black markers are/were very obviously not illegal. The law doesn’t work like code, it’s filtered by humans. No court would ever come to the conclusion that something as mundane as black markers are illegal to possess.

You do mention it, but to draw it out for those who might not notice the naming: this is a later, fancier, more colorful version from Netscape _Communicator_ (‘Netscape 4’), which had a more golden hued, more ‘detailed’ UI. The article disc
