It’s virtually impossible for them because they’re not considering hiring more people to do it. Dollar General stores often run with one overworked staff member doing everything in the store, from stocking to working the register (which is

I don’t think this is true. Even if pricing in the shelves is accurate, in my experience Dollar General is typically a little more expensive than a normal mid-range supermarket (or e.g. Amazon) for most things.

People are downvoting you because your story seems crazy, but you’re right (and wrong). In the early 2010s there were reports that the EU was set to ban 3kW kettles in the anti-EU tabloid press. The ‘plans’ were discussions, were general (a

It’s not genuine. The fridge doesn’t show full-screen ads, the original Reddit post and image of the ‘Carol’ ad is staged. At best, this is a parable about the slippery slope our ad-ridden society is sliding down. https://9to5goo

Hardware and software are fungible. Do you demand circuit schematics? Hardware description language source code for all the ICs? Does it matter if it’s a FPGA vs a custom IC? What about CAD files for the industrial design - some of that is

One thing unexpected I found when setting up an OpenBSD based router recently: the web isn’t riddled with low-quality and often wrong SEO and AI slop about OpenBSD like it is for Linux. I guess there just isn’t enough money to be made produ

I wish this were further up in the comments. Most people seem to be assuming that you get all the marbles back. Imagine the chaos if someone were able to say ‘whoops, all those books you bought are no longer sellable!’. Imagine if Alan Cox

There seems to be a popular view nowadays that most old people grow to be senile (just look at any online discussion of old politicians for example). This is not the case!

I agree with you on that - that’s what my last paragraph was trying to convey. I don’t think pennies are necessary, and we are (were) wasting money making them. Nickels and dimes are probably in the same boat. But I was replying to your rep

In other countries that have eliminated pennies, was it done with more planning and advice from the government? It strikes me as uniquely American (perhaps uniquely Trumpian) to just stop making them and let whatever happens happen with no

A penny is reused over and over again, every time it changes hands. It’s not necessarily bad that it costs a few cents to make one if it has utility. It costs more to make a ceramic mug than it does to fill it with coffee. That doesn’t ma

Our house is in kind of a hollow despite being in a city, and I (and guests - all networks seem just as bad) get one bar basically all the time at home. Phone calls are hit-and miss without WiFi calling switched on.

I recently set up an OpenBSD based router in our home and, man, it felt like a breath of fresh air. I wrote about it here: https://www.blog.montgomerie.net/posts/2025-10-11-setting-up...
