The same problem exists in PHP, where "", "0" and 0 are all treated as false if you don't check the type. Welcome to the trap of loose typing.

I'm on Ubuntu and Android, and it would be a definite plus if I can drop my photos into a folder from where ever, and they're shared on the net.

I can't comment on the $25k price tag, or if SmugMug is as open as you describe it to be, but I DO want a service where I can share photos online without losing my sense of control over them. I have a DropBox, and if there's a service that

I like being part of the HN community, but I'd also like to be able to discuss HN-like topics with a South African flavour with South Africans. There's a few factors that makes coding and running startups in SA different: * Relatively low b

Looks aren't everything :) I don't use HN for it looks, but for the articles and discussions. Yes, the aesthetics contribute towards that, but at the end of the day, it's about the content. But yes, maybe it's overdone. UI was never one of

This might be true for some areas in Africa, but there are areas such as Gauteng which are quite densely populated, and already have extensive copper and in some places fibre networks. The only problem is that access to these networks are s

As some commentars said, choose the language/framework that suits the problem. That said, I have experienced and heard that the time made up by using Rails/Ruby, is much less than the time it takes to customize a Rails app to get it to do w

I can only add that yes, it's a good idea to get the .com as well. If you look at Slashdot, they didn't even bother with the .net (or they're struggling to get it), but they did register .org and .com
