My small input to this debate: I know I certainly bought—-actually paid for—-magazines like Computer Shopper just to browse the ads. I think many folks on HN of my generation likely did the same.

From the comments it seems like there's a bit of an information gap in terms of how email service providers (ESPs) like Mailgun operate, what data they must have routine access to, and how the space evolved to make money (this last par

Some comments suggest this is as a result of A/B testing, which may be part of the story today, but as someone who built websites that had to deal with returning large resultsets from time immemorial (i.e. pre-dot com bubble), it absol

I worked for a local ISP in the 90’s and can tell you you were not the only one. In my memory 56k modems were rarely reliably better than 33.6ks. Myself I seem to recall feeling luck to get around 40k connections.

I know we’re a small community overall, but I’m really (probably naively) surprised that a publication like Byte is no longer viable. The Linux whatever’s, PC whatever’s and Mac whatever’s, and even Communications of ACM and the equivalents

Ah fond memories of my roommate and I (circa 1997) hacking together a webcam of an RC car in our backyard. It involved me writing some sort of perl script to pipe the low-res jpegs dumped from god knows what camera to I honestly can't

I’m going to cite “worse is better” in disagreeing completely with the author. CSV has won because it’s easy to generate, easy to read as a human, easy to parse with standard tools (when generated correctly), and really the last point is t

Ironically, I got into the sysadmin (and later programming) business because a wise coworker of mine told me to stop mucking around in Windows 95 and grab the Sparc LX in the corner of the shop and install RedHat on it.

My handle pretty much unmasks me. I was pinged at work as the result of a post or two (thankfully in a good way). I kinda like that if you want to reach me you at least have to Google my handle. Just about the right amount of indirection
