Oh, I agree fully. Optimize for the common case. This is why I make a few exceptions like Ctrl-P. But in this situation, there's one variable missing: the urgency with which off system editing happens. If a machine is blow'd up and stuck

I've thought about it, but in the context of, "I'm reformatting this disk, and I need to back up my home directory to have after I'm done," since I would cry many tears if I hosed my ~. But in that case, I just make a copy of it somewhere

Protip for python hackers: "set wildignore+=*.pyc" in your .vimrc so Ctrl-P won't pick up all the .pyc files. It's pretty annoying to get every file you search for 2x, and then get a bunch of binary junk if you pick the wrong one. :-P

I use vim for coding just about every day, and as a rule, I try not to install plugins unless I really need/want it. Reason being is if, on occasion, I need to do a little editing inside an ec2 instance, or whatever, I don't want to type

Yep, it does. I use it daily in plain-old terminal vim on ubuntu, so I don't use it in GVim much, but trying it just now worked fine.

That's a pretty dramatized way of framing it, don't you think? I think the take-away is as simple as this: JavaScript is a dumpster-fire, and we should probably fix it so we can avoid more of this noise. Framing it as a soap opera conflic

Good call. Looking into this further, looks like you're right.[1] For the Mercator projection, translate, scale, and rotate are sufficient for the georectification of small images (read: floorplans). You'd need more of the affine toolbox

Reminds me of this talk about creativity by John Cleese[1]. The tl;dw is creativity is about getting into an open, uninhibited state of mind where new or risky ideas flow freely. Then getting into a closed, more focused state that allows

Agreed. I find even a beer or two throws me off. However, when I need to write emails or some more social, less technical thing, a couple beers makes me way more productive. I think because I tend to waffle on verbiage and think things l

What it's doing is setting ground control points that can be passed to a tool like gdal_translate[1]. That three-point alignment deal is setting three pairs of points made up of a lat,lng on the world, and an x,y on the image. Most world

As the author of a program/library, it just depends on what's important to you. If you want wide use of your code, a permissive license is the way to go. If you want to ensure your users offer the same freedom to users of their modificati

Puppet is pretty cool. I recently used it to do provisioning in a Vagrant[1] VM to duplicate my development environment for other members of my team. I'll probably use it for production stuff soon, too. [1] http://vagrantup.com/

I've been doing roughly this for a little while now, and it works pretty well. Particularly the bit about splitting the settings file. There are a few ways to do that, here[1]. [1] https://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/SplitSettings
