IBM Visual Age C++ on OS/2 installed an extension dll for the system Notepad to add syntax highlighting and jump-to-error, among other IDE features. In 1991-ish, it was very cool to me.

They've been around quite a long time, but yeah it seems like only SQL89 gets taught. Window Functions and CTEs are both major force multipliers in the language, so I always encourage folks to go learn them.

Minor nitpick: Nested subqueries ARE awkward, which is why I would express SELECT device id, sum(abs_delta) as volatility FROM ( SELECT device_id, abs(val - lag(val) OVER (PARTITION BY device_id ORDER BY ts)) as abs_delta

Didn't the VisualAge IDEs do this with their built-in version control? This was 20 years ago, and I seem to remember that the version control was at the method level, not file level.

Remote updating doesn't provide apparent power measurement, a power measurement chip does - this does require an upgraded meter, yes, but does not necessitate a smart one, although the economics of upgrading a fleet of meters probably
