Plaza Accord -> Louvre Accord. The Japanese real estate bubble was directly caused by the former and the latter put the nail in the coffin by massively tightening the Japanese economy, bursting the huge debt bubble and robbing the BOJ of

Or just adding a notice to the site that `Arm is a registered trademark of Arm corporation` or similar bullshit which gets exactly the same job done.

I can think of few places that embrace less "American values" than Vietnam. I say that as someone that lived there and now lives in Thailand, ie I'm aware of the tradeoffs of such places.

More correctly be economically controlled by the US. See the Plaza accord and the subsequent Louvre accord. Japan never would have signed either if US wasn't able to strong arm them into sinking their own economy. Guns are a hell of a

I switched to primarily JVM (Kotlin mostly, some Java) a few years ago and this feeling has for the most part gone away. Having actually stable, actually good tooling/compiler/build systems makes a world of difference to mental he

Seems to block Thailand for absolutely no reason. IMO blocking entire countries is completely useless then again I mostly have experience operating very high traffic sites, maybe things are different for tiny inconsequential blogs.

I had never heard of your service until now but your reply has probably landed you $8/month. Bootstrapped startups deserve my money and commendable leadership should be rewarded.

I'll believe it when I see it. The end-times of China's growth is like a broken record, except it goes dormant for a few years at a time. Their debt crisis is pretty bad but not insurmountable in a country where the government con

I do think there is a large gap between truly self taught and bootcamp programmers. Most self taught programmers have bounced through several languages, frameworks and different attempts to "crack" programming. Bootcampers in my e

This is basically a masterpiece in missing the point of Tarsnap IMO. IMO Tarsnap is about being the perfect lifestyle business for an extremely technical engineer, it's something I aspire to build one day also. Billing? Just the most s

For me it's three fold. First is that my usage of Tarsnap pre-dates my usage of rsync.net so it's been the primary backup of my home directory since ~2010. I haven't felt a need to change it and the 2 occasions I needed to re

Pilots are a little special, their panic mode is also a checklist, known as the memory items. This doesn't work for normal people because normal people don't drill non-normal events until the response is instinctive.

Extremely good deduplication means that for the core set of very important data I backup to Tarsnap the costs are negligible. I imagine the math is probably different if your data is changing more frequently. I for instance use other servic

I think you might have misread the graphs. The graph is showing a 4x peak/~6x average improvement in TPS. Because of this the load is less I/O bound and thus CPU is able to be fully utilised. If you want to measure efficiency you

IMO JVM + Loom is the better runtime and with Kotlin it has the superior language also. Before Loom there was often a case to pick Go just for goroutines but that time has passed for me at least. Go still has it's place in my toolbox,

My favourite one is the ghost cities. Sure some are still under-populated/didn't work out as well as planned but by and large the pre-building of cities/districts has worked out well.

Climate change will kill millions in the next ~40-60 years and if course isn't corrected 100s of millions will follow. Seems like it will do a pretty damn good job of killing us even if it fails to kill all of us. I agree AGI would be
