Maybe I'm missing something, but why not create a software RAID 1+0 array of disks (easily doable with EBS volumes and mdadm) instead of relying on a heartbeat-style solution as described in this post?

Good to know. My doctor suspected that I might have ulcerative colitis, but luckily it was not the case. I was highly symptomatic due to my incredibly poor lifestyle habits that I described elsewhere in this thread, so suspecting that I mig

When I was in university it got to the point where drinking tap water was difficult; forget orange juice, coffee and pasta sauce. In addition to the physical pain of consuming anything that was remotely acidic, the frequent (6-8/day) bowel

The title seems a tad misleading. The author describes some relatively major lifestyle changes (huge changes in diet, sleeping habits, large increase in aerobic/anaerobic physical activity), of which the elimination of caffeine is but a sma

You make some good points that are making me rethink my key-per-service approach. Though, other than the need to replace N keys when my machine(s) is compromised, there's not that much key management overhead.

At the time when I wrote this, I had three separate machines that I used regularly: personal laptop, work laptop, work desktop.

I use ZSH, which if configured properly will also do this for you. Huge timesaver when I need to connect to a half-dozen hosts.

We run an IRC server (all our employees are remote), and spent perhaps 1 hour setting it up on one of our internal ops boxes, and zero hours maintaining it since it's gone up. Uptime is currently in the months. Sliding scale pricing based o

Neat. From a very cursory glance at the HyperDex paper, it looks like a distributed kd-tree with the addition of a single-dimensional key subspace (to use their terminology). The real clever part, I believe, is the value-dependent chaining

Indeed – I try to avoid the hive mind (when it isn't backed by science) and form my own opinions, though. The great thing about personal fitness and nutrition is that everyone has got a great laboratory at their disposal at all times.

There is quite a lot of science and study behind fasting, and it can actually be good for your health. I say this as someone who does a caloric fast (read: no caloric intake at all, fluids allowed) 6-7 times a week for intervals of 16-20 ho

To be fair, the intent of Gimme Bar is to be a personal web-saving tool first, and a "social" tool a very, very distant second. There are enough tools and applications out there that let you share links and pictures of stuff you like, but
