This is a really great point. In fact, _any_ survey with self-selecting participants is highly susceptible to selection bias. What surveys like this are good for is measuring the opinions of a group of people, weighted by degree of explicit

That is what I get in Chrome when I tab to autocomplete "n". At some point I must have typed in "news.ycombinator.org" out of curiosity, and Chrome decided to favor it.

I posted this after being really inspired by the HN post about John Carmack's .plan file[1], and then doing some research to discover what exactly a .plan file is. [1] http://news.ycombinator.org/item?id=3367230

If anybody else was wondering what a .plan file is... it is part of the Finger Protocol[1], put together in 1977: > The program would supply information such as whether a user is currently logged-on, e-mail address, full name etc. As we

Hi Nick! Thanks for making this, I'm going to add it to a project right now. One quick note -- it'd be cool if you had a big "find me on Github" button near the top, just for convenience. And so that people understand right away that it is

I was hoping that this turns out to be something really classy like Deck ads[1]. Turns out the underlying technology is provided by the Federated Media[2], the same company that provides ads for AppleInsider[3] and Boing Boing[4]. There's s

The first comment on the post explains that the account in question appears to be set up by a spammer. It is an impersonation by a bad apple, not something Facebook did. Reporting it should result in its removal, hopefully. If that doesn't

Interesting find! About Google, I'm pretty sure they have methods to detect hidden content that simply exists as SEO spam.

For reference, there is another discussion about this here: http://news.ycombinator.org/item?id=3277661 A few people from Google, including Matt Cutts, are taking part in that discussion.

This is addressed in the article: they used many replicated objects. They stored one rock, then rendered it a gajillion times. They claim they were able to do this by applying something like a search algorithm to the objects being rendered.

This looks amazing -- I've been needing something like this for a while. The one piece of advice I'd give is to create some kind of backup and or export feature. It's a little scary to think about putting so much valuable information about

I skimmed through the comments and was surprised to not see anything about Project Implicit being done at Harvard. This is a research project that is being done using actual, real science. We don't need to armchair speculate about this stuf

This is not a story about Apple Computer, this is a story about analysts who mis-predicted something. Apple had predicted revenue of $25 billion, and they actually had revenue of $28.27 billion, their second best quarter ever. So why did th

The issue is not at all with his opinion. It is that he expressed it in a horrendously, gratuitously crass and offensive way. Here is a transliteration into humane language of what he said: "My heart goes out to Steve Jobs' family in their

Same here, except for the surprise. I've only ever owned two Apple products, but I am constantly inspired by Steve Jobs. No one else has had more of an impact on how I work as a designer and developer. And somehow it wasn't just because he

What is so impressive about the story is that he didn't break the rules, he found a clever way to work within them. He was confronted with a brick wall most people would have seen as non-negotiable, and he found a way around it. This requir

This is really nifty. One nit that I'd pick, however. The urls break without the hash. With the demo, for example, these urls produce two different results: http://cmpolis.github.com/Pagify/#about http://cmpolis.github.com/Pagify/about
