In the Sudbury School I work at, this does not happen. Occasionally there can be anger, but people get over it fairly quickly. It is not considered about winning or losing. It is a completely different frame of mind.

I wish we could do counterfactual analysis. I would love to see if it was traditional education that led people to requiring a class to learn or if it is intrinsic. As a species, we certainly have strong mentoring needs for learning mastery

I work at a Sudbury School and my experience does not support this. My take on this is that we have a community rooted in a fundamental acceptance of people that tolerates disagreements. Different attitudes and views are welcomed. Thus grou

I wrote a markdown based version of literate-programming that allows one to write it with lots of comments and organize the code in anyway you wish. But then when compiled, you can see all the code without all the long comments. You can sti

There is no need to feel guilty. In general, many people need to detox from a childhood that lacked sufficient freedom to explore and become a full human being. Their internal programming then takes college and its new freedom as an opportu

I certainly had that idea before I started. I think we all do. And I hope it may happen here and there. Mentoring and collaboration are to me the true teaching models that work for humans. But interests have to align, of course. We are stil

This is a school where kids have a great deal of freedom, particularly in regards to eating. This leads to messes. I write the worst messes up to be adjudicated by our Judicial Committee (a team of students and possibly a staff, depending o

Students need not graduate from a Sudbury school. They can simply age out of it. In general, it is not an accredited diploma and so it is only if a student wishes to do so. But the process if a student choose to do it is to answer the quest

The wave of one particle is just a suitable approximation. The wave is a wave in configuration space, one for the whole universe. This is also what it is in standard quantum mechanics or in many worlds. It is always the same wave. Somehow B

I never understand why the double slit experiment puzzles people. Is it not clear that we are dealing with particles guided by a wave? This is Bohm's theory and it works perfectly well for answering these questions.

The keyword is "local". Non-local hidden variables is trivial (Bohm's theory) in that we just posit the particles have positions and are guided by the wave function. Hence, particle and wave properties. Simple, clean, clear,

You've been given the task of controlling lots of kids, squishing their natural learning desires and ways. This should be draining as it is against the ways of how we evolved. See for example http://www.salon.com/2013&
