So now you know that a deadman switch is the better way to report availability. The logic was backwards for this signal. The default condition is failed. Not failed requires proof. It's interesting how easy it is to accidentally invert

An economy is about the volume of cashflow (value flow), not magnitude of wealth. If you have all the money in the world, you will find there is nothing you can buy. While a large number of, not free but very low cost, laborers will build

The primary design purpose of SHA-3 was not to replace SHA-2 with something 'better' it was to provide an alternate approach for hashing such that if one approach to hashing is compromised there is a completely different approach

Peter suggests that everyone using SHA-1 should move to SHA-256. That's a reasonable suggestion, but I say as long as you're making hashing changes why not move to SHA-512. Remember, it's also in the FIPS SHA-2 standard and

Sounds like the Andon cord[1] approach. It does seem to be superior in many contexts to a strict command and control hierarchy. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andon_(manufacturing)

This reminds me of the very insightful article "Geeks, MOPs, and sociopaths"[1] posted on hn a couple of years ago. I'm not sure to what degree it can be mitigated, but it sure seems like something to account for when enginee

We use this fact in our ID system. Consider bloom filters... so many different 'hash functions' you get for free out of 64 bytes of hash data.

Yes I think your title is better. But the charts in question are "Top Paid" and "Top Grossing". So it does seem like a very odd result.

So the next question is did the ranking snow ball more revenue, or is the story ranking has a steep falloff AND it has no marketing value.

Minimalist design is not even remotely about fashion. At least not as applied to UX and conversion flow. It's about intuition vs cognition. Amazon is blind to how extraordinarily bad their UI is probably because they are putting too mu

Ok, thanks. So that particular solution is not cost effective for the CA market, but what about a different market? Or perhaps a different mechanism of transportation?

Ok, but isn't that still a transportation problem at the core? With the addition of a minimum quality requirement?

Ok, too expensive seems like a reasonable argument, but how much too expensive, specifically? I mean if water is available but not clean how expensive can a purifier be before being at parody with cost of transporting the same amount of wa

Ok, I'll bite. I'm the dumbing guy in the room, so I need some help understanding. Given that water is 71% of the earth's surface[1], it seems like this is mostly a transportation problem. We don't need to create water,

It's curious why people try to build arguments for linear or even worse growth. The arguments are so odd, it seems to me that they are more about the wishes of the author then an attempt to provide a counter argument. Perhaps it's

Intention has no 'from' clause. You express the intent as "I want this guy's hours to be 8." It doesn't matter if the UI shows 5, and another mechanism has changed the value to 9 in the background, your intent

Ah yes ok I can understand that. I can see from a marketing point of view that you might want to simply and quietly avoid the (roughly) 1 in 1,000,000 ids which start with 4 specific characters. Still, it's a bit culturally specific.
