Insanely bad compared to books or other permanent records. The human memory system did not evolve to be an accurate record of the past. It evolved to keep us alive by remembering dangerous things.

What is this? I can’t tell if it’s satire or serious or AI slop.

I don't think this would work. A big part of why ChromeOS is so simple is the Google services backing it. Without the unified login, automated backups, verified app store, and hardware certification ChromeOS wouldn't be the easy

If more people want MRIs then the market will create more machines. And hopefully the tech will improve over time, though we might be waiting for room temperature superconductors for real progress. Lack of staff to analyze the results is a

Self was influenced by Smalltalk, not the other way around. Smalltalk was developed in the 1970s. Self in the 1980s.

Finding the impact crater pretty much cemented it. It absolutely happened. The remaining questions are around if the impact was enough to trigger the extinction on its own or if other factors compounded the problem.

I think what you were saying is that it depends entirely on the type of writing you’re doing and who your audience is.

When I worked at Markforged we had a printer that could put solid carbon fiber threads into the print using a second extruder (on the same print head), so it's certainly possible. It was $20k, though. Getting this down to something acc

This is kind of a weak and fluffy article coming from the Economist. As a long term subscriber I’m disappointed.

Thank you so much for Executor. I used to run it on my 486 Linux box, over an X11 SSH tunnel to the Sun workstation I used in the computer labs for work on campus. I balanced my checkbook and wrote essays in emulated Excel and Word (with ro

I feel like we are fighting the wrong battle here. Eventually AI bot behavior online will be indistinguishable from human, but so what?! We've had teams of underpaid humans being paid to be organic bots for years now. Whether the perso

The PNG format has chunks with types. So you can add an additional chunk with a new type and existing decoders will ignore it. There is also some leeway for how encoding is done as long as you end up with a valid stream of bits at the end (

A fun trick I do with my web based drawing tools is to save a JSON representation of your document as a comment field inside of a PNG. This way the doc you save is immediately usable as an image but can also be loaded back into the editor.

I don’t buy the argument that we need design harmony between platforms. If I wanted an iPad like experience on my Mac I would have bought an iPad. I paid for a mouse and keyboard centric experience. Liquid Glass actively takes away from tha

It did have that at launch, but the transition was very confusing. There was (is?) an "iTunes Match" thing to replicate your personal mp3s in the cloud rather than uploading them. It was a real mess.

Sometimes a company can know the problem is real and be unable to address it. I was at Palm when HP bought us. HP knew the future was mobile and wanted to not be just a low margin OEM for someone else’s software platform. Buying Palm was a
