For those of you who may not be familiar with them, using http://fastutil.dsi.unimi.it/ collections instead of Java collections is essentially the work-around for most things you'll use. Fastutil has custom classes that remove the pointer

I'm reading the Intelligent Investor. Graham is extremely conservative and demands, among other things, a 20 year history of dividends and a low P/E. I don't think he'd touch internet stock in general because it's here today and gone tomorr

Where does that page claim perfect ACID semantics? It's meant to describe what Sensei gives you for each aspect of ACID. Sensei needs an event stream to process. We've open-sourced and apache-fied Kafka which is a great candidate for an eve

This is exactly how it works. Queries based on some kind of id will always hit the same server, except when the server goes down. Sensei expects a semi-durable "data stream" for writes, which is very different from how most other databases

Yes. It's a partitioned system - you just need to have enough replicas per partition. Clients track cluster state by registering listeners to zookeeper.

The facets let you support counting and group by - is there something else you had in mind? Edit: You can get a pretty quick idea of what's supported the query language at http://senseidb.github.com/sensei/bql.html . Since Sensei was desig

Looks like someone non-LinkedIn posted this so the rest of the team is unlikely to be around for a few more hours. Let me know if you have any questions! I worked mostly on the distribution & rpc piece.

Please don't do that. I don't want to go work for some Scala shop or team in the future and find out that I'm limited to L1-only features because of management practice.

I work at LinkedIn, so I think I'm reasonably qualified to provide my opinion. I'm certain that this won't work well. Charging $5 per profile view ($50 per 10) is simply outrageous. Most profiles will be junk or irrelevant - recruiters work

Yep. I'm one of the locked up employees at LinkedIn and I can't buy options (puts or calls) as part of my agreement. So there's no way to hedge. I should note though that the executives and venture capitalists are ALSO locked out, which is

Boosting, which he mentioned, is an ensemble method so I assume the parent is familiar with them. Ensemble methods incorporate multiple weak classifiers and work to make them stronger. I think the parent was thinking of the reverse of this,

I don't understand how it would be safe at all for the recipient. If the "smell prevention" failed couldn't the police just arrest whomever it was shipped to? I can understand that the shipper is pretty safe dropping the package off but if

I agree. It's a nice site and a lovely visualization, but it's not the right way to solve the problem. A PID controller or something similar like a Kalman filter is the way to go. The Anybots robots are a great example of a PID filter in ac

Check out scalagwt. They've enhanced GWT to read a protobuf abstract syntax tree so that any language could be compiled to javascript if it can target that output. The first language they have working is Scala, which is far more suited to w

$136M is a lot of money for a distributed file system. Can anyone compare GlusterFS to HDFS? I think they're booth GoogleFS clones but I'm not sure on the details except that HDFS uses a name node and is written in Java.

I can tell you what the problem is: overzealous postmortems. The head of engineering wants to be able to say what went wrong and how to fix it next time. That's probably fine, if the solution is better automation and failure detection. But

Darn, the Kindle DX is still $379. Everything else got a nice price drop. I've been waiting for a hardware/software update to the Kindle DX and a possible price drop for quite a while now, but I'm not sure I'll ever get it at this point.

The assumption doesn't have to be invalid. California citizens may be wealthier than those other states and spend more money on Amazon goods. California may also have more computer users with decent internet access than, say, Wyoming.

It's a hybrid OO-FP language that is statically typed with decent type inference. This has never been done before. Perl is not statically typed. You might think that's a good thing, but I don't because I routinely refactor in a large code b

Are you sure about that? It could take a long time. Would you have bet on Apple if you were trying to find the next Microsoft? (Would you even consider Apple the next Microsoft?) What about Google? I don't think there is a "next Google". Wi
