As A sysadmin, I have two general rules about scripting; 1. If it's longer than 15 lines, rewrite it in {python, ruby, perl} 2. Never accidentally rewrite grep, sed or awk.

Linux is not bad for your hardware, misconfiguration is bad for your hardware. Annecdotally, heavy graphic card use on any laptop (yes even running windows) will cause a heat death in a shorter ammuont of time than normally expected.

Revision control does not need software per se. Keeping multiple directories and files works too (not as well though).

I've had a love affair with the x200's for the last few years, x200, x220, and the x230. They are all very competent machines. I'm currently using a x200 with an SSD running linux as my primary machine.

You probably should be expecting consistant DDOS attacks, or at least aggressive scanning. OP failed to mention setting up DKIM and SPF as well.

Thank you for doing ten-minutes of research. Your investigative style of journalism is apparently better than both Kaspersky and the BBC.

Serverfault has the same problems. I barely go back there anymore, I just lost interest (despite being in the top 100). The questions are usually not that interesting, but I do enjoy helping the new sysadmins that don't know where to begin.

As a systems guy, I appreciate stories about developers learning that systems are complicated, and the latest and greatest technology is often not as stable or optimized as hoped. Although, I do have high hopes for Key:Value store data repo

Yeah, don't follow other people's guides to get started. Just realize that org-mode has so many features (including Literate Programming) it's easy to get lost. Just start by using it as an outliner, when your files get too big or you need

Orgmode also has an amazing extension babel, which allows Literate Programming (or just inserting code snippets). Using the #+BEGIN_SRC <mode-name> tag will also allow you to edit any code snippet in its own major mode.
