Ansible doesn't necessarily need ssh or a central control node, just a place to store roles as artifacts, such as Artifactory or a storage bucket. Pass all of your variables and dependencies (role artifact urls, python requirements.txt

When I visited Kenya in 2012, I was fascinated to discover that this existed, and had been going strong for years already. Meanwhile in the US, money transfer seems dated by comparison. Crypto offers some hope, but the ecosystem is so fragm

Hi, I've often worked in corporate environments where it wasn't necessarily allowed to spin up a VPC, or to create an internet gateway. In the time I was creating this, many companies who are in healthcare or are otherwise locked

Shamelesss plug: Keights, my Kubernetes installer[1] for AWS supports 1.18 (the latest version available on EKS is 1.15). Keights also supports running etcd separate from the control plane, lets you choose instance sizes for the control pla

I don't think Spotify has any good features for finding new artists. I've used all of the ones you mentioned and generally don't like the playlists. Usually they play songs I already know, and the new ones they introduce I ju

Spotify's algorithmic recommendations aren't very good. I use Spotify, but always build my playlists by hand, after finding music elsewhere. Typically that's Youtube, but I also follow the artists I like on twitter and get ne

Check out https://www.terraform.io/docs/providers/template/d/cloudinit... if you want to do something more complex than a single shell script.

The app wouldn't build the infrastructure though, a controller on the cluster would. If you're using e.g. kube2iam or kiam, then only the controller would receive permissions. If you're in AWS and the controller uses CloudFor

Oh, I probably will give it a try. Helm is pretty much inescapable since the community has rallied around using it for distributing manifests. It's just sad to need yet another bespoke tool when the general purpose ones do a fine job.

Exactly right. I do the same when dealing with YAML in general.

The worst aspect of Helm is that is is not idempotent. If you "upgrade" a release, it always rewrites the config map that the release is stored in, even if there are no changes. The config maps also get corrupted if there is an in

It's a fully managed version of Amazon ECS (elastic container service). With Fargate, you don't need to manage the EC2 instances that make up the cluster, as is required with ECS. Early on, Amazon tried to avoid offering a managed

I can usually go a whole afternoon without songs being repeated, unless I manually choose a new song. Then I sort of end up back in the same playlist all over again. But if it were not for YouTube, there are so many good songs I would have

YouTube with auto play turned on. Play one song you like, and more of the same genre will usually follow. YouTube has a lot of good music that isn’t available on music sites such as Spotify.

What I'm envisioning wouldn't involve creating a cluster. As soon as I set up the account, I could download the kubeconfig and start creating resources. The cluster would be invisible to me, aside from the namespace I was given.

I think it is a realistic expectation. Think of EC2 in 2006. Getting started was almost immediate if you already had an Amazon account. You downloaded a CLI tool and your credentials, and started a VM. Prior to this, it might have seemed un

Well, CDK actually produces CloudFormation templates. Sorry, but I always feel the urge to jump in when people claim Terraform should be used instead of CloudFormation because of personal preferences. If you are AWS native and already using

I also worked on a team that built something similar, and I've seen it done in other companies. With services like this, and others like Transit Gateway, it's getting a lot easier to manage multiple accounts and VPCs. I haven'

I have many Ansible roles that I trust to do the right thing over and over again. Though, I never use bash for scripting, and when I do shell out in Ansible I keep it extremely simple and always use a `when` or `creates` condition to keep i

I don't agree it is subpar. I have a fairly long list of reasons for preferring CF over Terraform. I agree on combining CF with Ansible though. My recipe is to wrap a CF template in an Ansible role. It makes for a versioned chunk of au

Hi Justin, thanks for the feedback. I'll take another look at kops as it's been a while. I do think it could benefit from having a knob to turn off some of the pre-validation, or for it to do functional checks instead of checking

They both use kubeadm, but the design is very different. Kubespray runs Ansible against the hosts in the cluster, whereas Keights uses Ansible to build CloudFormation stacks, and all the instances then bootstrap themselves with kubeadm.

Where Kops is a command line tool with subcommands like create-cluster and update-cluster, Keights uses Ansible roles with CloudFormation underneath. This works well to manage the cluster from CI/CD, where updating the cluster is just
