I think I will probably avoid Hacker News tomorrow. At least one story every day has been ridiculous, I can't imagine what it will be like after the announcement.

This has been around for years, through RSSpect ( http://www.rsspect.com/ ) by the wonderful Ryan North.

To add to this, threatening to chargeback can be an excellent way to get decent customer service out of some places. Most customer service associates are trained to go way out of their way to avoid it.

They are very aware of how they are speaking, and in person, they are the most precise people you will ever meet. I recently had occasion to speak with a patent attorney, and not only did he explain the patent in plain English, but I was f

How to reverse a linked list in C is not hacker _news_. Additionally, sites like these are a disease. At work, I overheard a phone screen in which the interviewer asked the question, "you have a collection of numbers, all of which appear tw

I think the main issue is just that on a given project, there needs to be agreement on what will be used. I hate opening up a file in vim and seeing some lines tabbed and some lines spaced and things not lining up right at all. :retab has

Right, I would have thought it impressive if any major DB was the source. Getting it to the point where the source DB is taxed as much as possible seems to be the point of all your optimization. Nice that you could get there.

The linked blog post gives more details on how he did it and the throughput he got. http://practicalcloudcomputing.com/post/284222088/forklift-1... Very interesting that Oracle became the bottleneck.

I think that's just a coincidence. I received a similar notification about a year ago. I think they just get hacked from time to time.

My high school US history teacher said this (during the ramp-up to the Iraq war): "Posturing for war can be very good, actually going to war is NEVER good." The parallel here, in my mind, is that Google has an opportunity for accomplishing

In a similar vein, I'd like to rename my account. Though, I doubt this is easy, so I'll just grin and bear it.

I completely agree about the power of test-driven development, but I think the take-away hits home the most: "...shaking things up, doing things a different way for awhile..., is never a bad idea." I recently spent some time forcing a frien

Definitely. And it's pretty apparent that the responder wanted to actually reference something, rather than just rely on someone saying, "10 photons should be enough for anyone"

Very good, somehow hadn't seen this yet. Thanks! If all comments on HN were disagreements, this could be an interesting alternative to the simple karma score of a comment. Better yet, f we could tease the concepts of each level away from

There's so much we don't know about this imaginary world that I don't think this is a fair assessment. If, early on in the evolution of animals with brains, it was typical for them to communicate through these connections, wouldn't it make

I think what went wrong was that they publicly displayed the score for whichever axis was most significant. Here, the only score that is displayed to all is the only positive one we have: "this comment adds to the discussion." The reason I

Does anyone have some info on how we could get involved in bringing Try Ruby back up? (And without the bugs I experienced the last time I tried it)

I'm quite taken aback by the name calling here. > When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. E.g. "That is an idiotic thing to say; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3." I hope you kno

Very unsettling. I don't understand how this topic is a punchline to so many people. Utterly tactless, but I'm not sure how much you'd be able to muster with a url like that.

Maybe not a new machine, but how hard is it to immediately wipe to a clean installation? "Windows" doesn't come with the "gigs worth of crap", the machines typically sold with Windows preloaded do.

I think a distinction needs to be made. The anti-object seems to provide the environment in which the object moves. I don't think the point is for there to be absolutely no logic in the object itself, the logic should merely be simplified

Ok, I see now that the original poster was effectively saying "this is why", not necessarily using the "this" meme that I was confused about. Still, I got my answer and the post has been clarified for me. Thanks, guys.

Sorry for this to get all meta, but what is the meaning of saying "this" at the beginning of a comment? I've seen it elsewhere, sometimes as the entire response. I'm afraid I missed the beginnings of this convention, and it's not intuitiv

Right, I don't understand the downvotes though, I was simply giving the only data point I had. Anecdotal though it is, from this, I don't see it as entirely unreasonable for someone in a larger city like NYC to make as much as my original

While commuting back and forth to Seattle on the ferries, my dad said he heard a couple people comparing how much they'd made begging that day and it was in the $200-$300 range. They had been disappointed in the "slow" day.

I love this bug! It is deeply ingrained in my head that == is the right thing to use, but I still use the convention of placing the test value first (i.e. 4 == numItems) to be sure I don't ever do this.
