Oh, I thought "on the real" fit the context better, meaning they knew in their heart of hearts it was bullshit, but "off the record" is about the same.

Excel is not fundamentally suited, but it's fundamentally used. I wish you luck, but I long ago declared defeat against Excel. I can't prevent everyone from using it. I have come to accept that whatever Excel does is what I have t

To people asking, "why do they use Excel?" that's like asking "why must we be subjected to gravity?" The whole world's data ultimately comes from or ends up in an Excel spreadsheet. Sure, we might use other int

A lot of people say this, but if I were to sit next to you and tell you what the notation means whenever you asked, would you instantly understand the concept? I don't think so. You still need to do work on your own with the concept be

So what do the compiler errors look like when you mess this up? Say, you use the wrong argument passing for one of the lambdas.

I'm really happy to see that this is an example of really selling free software: no non-free software in sight. I'm so used to the usual response to "how do I sell free software?" to be "write some non-free software

Haha, it's like Maclane said: "I did not invent category theory to talk about functors. I invented it to talk about natural transformations." You gotta go at least to the third level of abstraction to get the real meat.

I think the general negative stereotype about Spaniards in Mexico is that they're brash and stupid. Mexico's negative Polish jokes demeaning a culture's intelligence would be comparable to Galician jokes, dating from a time w

I'm not sure gauge integrals are really "the most general integral". As you say, it doesn't work as well as the Lebesgue integral in multidimensional settings, does it? It also needs a bit of a tweak to give you the anal

I wish antitrust legislation in the US was brought back or enforced. Forbidding direct comparisons is an anticompetitive practice if I've ever seen one.

Decimals are easier to compare than fractions. I can't easily work out in my head which one is bigger, 457/790 or 580/924, but I can easily see that (approximately) 0.57848 is smaller than (approximately) 0.62771. Since the f

I think the problem is that the definition, while valid, makes you hyperfocus on irrational numbers this way. Seldom do we prove that a number is irrational by inspecting its decimal expansion. This would be in most cases a very unnatural p

Thanks. I browsed through the job ads with keen interest, hoping to find something that could possibly pay more. Sadly for me, most of the list seems to be in the US. Ah well, hopefully the ecological software job market will expand so that
