In recent years, Microsoft has been pushing automatic updates more and more. At the same time, the updating experience just hasn't gotten any better. My Linux install never urges me to update. Updates come out many times a day, and I c

When you serve files over https (which you always should) you can't use sendfile anyway. The data will have to be encrypted, so you can't have the kernel send the data straight into the socket.

What happens is well specified, see [1] and more specifically [2]. I don't understand where packages even enter the picture though. Symbols/packages and method dispatch are entirely separate concepts that are hardly related. You c

One alternative view on history that I think could be very useful, is a graph showing not just where I was, but also how I got there and where I went. It happens fairly often that I remember reading something through, say, HN, but I have no

I wish Europeans were more afraid of it, because trusting your government too much is dangerous. The thing with governments is that they change. They may change for the better, for worse, or somewhere in the middle; you can never be sure. F

There's an emacs package for that[1]. It's not as well integrated and there are some rough edges, but it's incredibly useful. I use it a lot . Often for quick local refactoring, but also for larger things like you mentioned.

I don't understand why October 4, 2012 is even mentioned here. That's when they disabled public folders for new users, but now they are getting rid of all of them. Dropbox is getting rid of public folders entirely.

It's odd how neither this post, nor the spec, nor GitHub's "Mastering Markdown" help page[1], nor the more complete "Basic writing and formatting syntax" page[2], mentions the fact that GitHub treats every newl

Maybe something changed very recently, but as far as I know Minecraft really doesn't make efficient use of multiple cores. Almost all game logic happens on a single thread, so getting fewer, more powerful cores would be a much better w

I think most CL programmers would agree with several of your points. Using lists of symbols instead of strings is not useful. Though there are infinite ways to model the calendar, a slightly better way would be something like the following.

I'm not sure which WeeChat you're comparing to, but practically nothing you said applies to the weechat I know[1]. It's primary interface is a CLI one, it is incredibly flexible, and it's a full fledged IRC client with e

What the OP takes to the extreme is a property of weak typing, not dynamic typing. These properties are separate issues. A language is either statically typed or dynamically typed, and it is also either strongly typed or weakly typed. In

Why does Wayland need any sort of ssh-agent/gpg-agent support? I can't think of any reason for Wayland to have anything to do with their functionality, but I'm not at all familiar with Wayland.

That was initially confusing to me as well, but it isn't that bad. If you open a .png (or similar) and edit it, there's a button in the File menu (I believe shortcut ctrl-shift-e) that exports directly to the original filename.

While I agree with your sentiment, that's not what that comment says at all. It's about getting a copy of the data into the Internet Archive, regardless of what happens to gmane.org itself.

I think the real problem with the fizzbuzz example is that the "clever" solution fails to properly break the problem down. Fizz buzz essentially consists of two parts: 1. We have an increasing sequence of numbers. 2. Every number
