This is a bit troubling as an iPhone developer. It'd be nice to be able to keep a profile on your users not for the purposes of advertising, but for the purposes of developing meaningful use-case metrics. I suppose the proper thing to do wo

I use both Ruby and C# daily. I love them both. My only complaints about Ruby and the Ruby ecosystem are these: 1) Minor versions of Ruby are incompatible with each other. 1.9.1 to 1.9.2 requires some code changes. 2) Developers of non-popu

You're equating ethics with the law. They are not the same. In some circumstances, it may be seen as ethical to break the law. One that comes off the top of my head would be... what if you're wife is going into labor and you need to speed t

I'm reminded of this article: http://www.ribbonfarm.com/2009/10/07/the-gervais-principle-o... TL;DR Essentially, senior executives are sociopaths. Since senior executives are typically rich, these articles are related. From my personal ex

I really like the idea of this game, but I like for ideas to try a new way to get rejected everyday that aren't purposely outlandish. This comment has some good ideas on what you can do to potentially get rejected: http://news.ycombinator.

Actually, I never thought I'd find one, but DuckDuckGo is a search engine that every programmer should use. In fact, I've found that DuckDuckGo can be better than Google in a lot of cases.

Am I one of the few who thinks that this is absurd? This reminds me of that 37 Signals Article: http://37signals.com/svn/posts/1941-press-release-37signals-... I realize that this valuation doesn't come from a VC investment but from a pri

I really appreciate reading stories like this. For budding startups like mine, we need every available resource at our disposal on technology choices. I also think articles like this will encourage Google's engineers to keep making GAE a be

My problem with altruism is one of audience. Many times I've offered to give aways books for free or to match donations to Wikipedia... but very little seem to take my offers. Granted this is all done through my blog. I even send out my lin

You get an upvote for initiative. But, I don't see the use of it in its current state. Maybe you could turn it into a wishlist app or something and monetize it by affiliate sales (referrals)? Even better if you incorporate game mechanics. G

But I don't believe that you're really sorry. You just found a convenient way to use the phrase in an attempt to refute my point.

This reminds me of "Sorry-buts"... When someone almost always says "I'm sorry, but..." they are never usually that sorry. I've noticed these phrases often used by those who have a hard time taking responsibility for their actions or failure

I think there's a bit of FUD in your statements. I also believe that those who supported the bailout are the same who stood to lose the most i.e. the wealthy. I believe that the bailouts will only further encourage the same behavior and pro

I'm really interested in the TextMate hype as I haven't used it myself. But, it's concerning that updates rarely come. Wasn't a 2.0 version suppose to come years ago? It leads me to believe the developer(s) lost interest.

I did as well. It sounded exactly like Steve Jobs. At the time, I didn't know what Steve Jobs sounded like so it didn't quite click until I saw one of his keynotes. He even gave me his direct line to call him back regarding one of my apps.

I hear this sentiment a lot from people. In fact, I use to have this line of thinking. I've found that the only cure is to convince yourself to take action now or realize that it's not a priority. It's kind of like when people say that they

Maybe. C# uses != and == for string comparisons. Maybe the question should be: should an immutable string class be considered primitive considering how frequently it's used despite the fact it's internally passed by ref? I guess that debate

I really wish you could virtualize OS X. I would love to build a beefy Linux box as a base machine and virtualize OS X and Windows. It's my understanding you can do it, but it's a bit hacky, right?
