How about the result concerning finding the roots of polynomials; that there are increasingly complex exact and explicit formulae as you go from linear to quartic, but it's impossible to find such formulae for quintics or higher. I don't kn

Thanks for your comment. I'm allowing for different date formats (dd-mm-yyyy, mm-dd-yyyy, yyyy-mm-dd) when making the puzzles. But it hadn't occurred to me that seeing a non-American date on the home page could be off-putting to Americans.

The figure quoted of 78 is what's known as "period" life expectancy. It's life expectancy from birth based on mortality rates in 2008, without any future improvements. In practice death rates are expected to continue falling over time. Look
