Some of this is silly. Lie 1 is wrong. The uber rich (Gates and Ellison) are not a prescription for how to aim your life as a young person. Also, in the 2008 recession, people without 4-year degrees were hurt far worse and recovered slower

The downside, of course, is that people who are from poor families never get to attend college. This perpetuates poverty in certain families/neighborhoods/regions and discourages diversity of opinion in universities and the workpl

I heard a news story last fall that said they're doing this at Indiana University, but I went to a different university starting in 2006 and didn't receive anything like that. The story made it seem like a novel and nearly genius

My field is research biology (in Pharma, not academia where the pay situation is truly dismal), and the jobs are severely lacking. Even STEM is becoming saturated and will soon just be Engineering and Applied Math.

This is one barrier to entry in startups. This barrier is probably lower now than any time in history due to efficiency provided by technology, but it's still there.

There are lots of reasons for this, in my experience. Firstly, entrance counselling is provided right at the beginning. That is when students are at peak optimism, and most unaware of the realities of living on their own, much less understa

They also don't provide information in real terms. Sure, I owe a ton of money, but I have no idea what that means to me. How much per month for how many years? They're finally starting to give this information to students, but whe

As I understand it, smoking cessation programs have pretty bad success rates. An old article from JAMA [0] that seems to be one of the canonical papers in the field points out that only 23.6% of people in smoking cessation groups quit succe

I'm not so sure. The people who receive government checks in the US aren't the same people who would be amazing for the economy to have, which is why they're on government checks (they're either on disability or retireme

I believe the drug you reference is discussed as a previous case in which people were injured during clinical trials. The current casualties are part of a test of a different investigational cannabinoid pain-killer.

I imagine you'd have to crowdsource the purchasing as well. Asking a clerk to spend several days printing tickets might put them off.

Well I don't think you'd just walk up to someone and say: "I want to write you a ticket. What's your car worth?" It would have to be pegged to make model and year or something like that.

I have seen a proposal to make the cost of tickets based on value of the car. The thinking is that a person with an Audi is not at all disturbed by paying a $20 parking fine, so it isn't an incentive. It's an interesting idea, but

Some employers (such as mine) offer only high deductible plans, but one of the options is for them to deposit an amount directly into your HSA. This has the benefit of returning purchasing power for most low costs to the competitive capital

How high is your deductible? I think the highest I've seen is $5k, which is nothing to sneeze at, but also not really in the realm of bankrupting most families.

Most people aren't hauling scrap, either. And of course there could be autonomous solutions for that. If you don't have to own the truck, you could more easily get some sort of enclosed vehicle (like a box truck or small dump truc
