I've had some success by asking a late-stage candidate to take a day off of work, then to come and pair program for a half-day with each of two developers. I paid them the appropriate consulting day rate.

I think there's an inherent tension in frontend web programming, particularly when you're the sole operator in charge of UX, visual design and implementation. The part of you responsible for the UX and visual design wants to design nuanced

I enjoyed reading this source, and will probably use your Buffer/Stream classes in a project I'm working on. Thanks!

I'm actually on my second career since then. At the time of 9/11 I was an enterprise Java programmer. We built software for MBS desks: trade capture, portfolio management and risk analytics. Finance is hugely interesting, but I was not lear

I have about 3/4 of a panic attack if a big plane flies low near me in an urban environment. It has to be low enough for me to feel (or imagine that I feel) the vibration from the engines in my body. Now that I think about it, I also get fr

Thanks for posting that. It brought my awareness to something important. I worked in 1 WTC and was about to get into the elevator when the first plane hit on 9/11. I was outside on the corner when the second plane hit. When my head started

Totally. Two classes of respondent: people who thought, hm, fun, I'll use this as an excuse to dig into a new language, and folks who were looking for a job. I really just wanted a t-shirt but got there too late :) Folks interesting in sill

You're definitely not the only one. I've seen a number of projects in Pivotal Tracker that would have been better off using almost any other form of task / roadmap management. Also, a number of successful projects using anything from "one s

Let me add also: "Analysis and Use of Financial Statements" by White, Sondhi and Fried. It has nothing to do with computational finance but knowing more than nothing about financial statements and how to think about what a company actually

John Hull is canon. Read it, live it, love it, keep it under your pillow. It is truly superb. Nassim Taleb's "Dynamic Hedging" is the finest book I'm aware of on the subject of actually trading/managing vol portfolios. It's REALLY good. And

+1 for First Republic (SF). They are truly superb and I can't recommend them highly enough. You get access to a personal banker that you can contact directly via phone, email or in person, and who can do all sorts of helpful things for you.

I would run as far and fast away from this idea as possible. Implementing this is a horrendous sucking morass of death and the best available evidence (Yodlee) suggests that it's not an especially profitable service to provide.

I'm not sure that the total amount of money you can make by providing such a platform to customers is greater than the amount of money it will cost to build it. The main problem from a cost perspective is that there isn't a whole lot of eng

Do you know it to be the case that Color has paid a kid just out of school $150k + $1M in equity? When I was trying to hire Rails & front-end folks recently I was seeing the market around $100 - $130k for reasonably experienced people,

For context: Many brokers will guarantee an execution at VWAP. It's a competitive business. The last time I put in such an order, I traded a double-digit percentage of the day's volume and paid 10bp commission (0.10%).

VWAP is "volume-weighted average price," not "average price". Therefore, to replicate it, you need to participate in line with volume-at-time, not 1/N per time bucket. This requires you to estimate the volume envelope over the time period o

I've worked both on the buy and sell side of the new issue trade. On the buy side, as a proprietary trader, who had the option to buy the new issue (or not). On the sell side, pricing and structuring deals with the equity capital markets te
